BANORA POINT MAN INJURED AFTER POOL CHEMICALS EXPLODE

A DANGEROUS chemical explosion that blew up in a man's face yesterday has left him severely injured.
The Banora Point man was rushed to Tweed Hospital with deep lacerations to his chin and above the eyes.
He also suffered serious burns to his face and both eyes from the accident.
Tweed Heads Acting Inspector Jason Dowds said the 45-year-old man was on his driveway mixing chemicals for his pool about 5.45pm.
He shook the bucket which contained chlorine and water and put the lid on.
The lid exploded and made contact with his face causing the serious injuries.
Acting Insp Dowds said the man was not in a critical condition but was transported to a Brisbane burns unit from the Tweed Hospital.
Tweed Heads retained firefighter Mark Lewin said the man was looking after his neighbour's pool for them when the incident happened.

BURLINGTON Ñ Two different cleaning solutions used hours apart at St. Mary's Grade School reportedly caused the chemical reaction that sent 12 people to the hospital Friday, according to City of Burlington Fire Chief Richard Lodle.
The Fire Department received a call from the school, 225 W. State St., at 10:21 a.m. after someone working in the cafeteria noticed a chemical reaction had turned a rag orange in color, Lodle said Sunday. The school was evacuated shortly after fire crews arrived on scene.
Response time was quick, less than two minutes, because the fire station is only about four blocks from St. Mary's.
According to Lodle, the reaction occurred when someone in the cafeteria used a solution of water, dish soap and a quarter of a cup of bleach to clean up residue left on a countertop from the night before.
It is believed that the residue was left by someone who had been mopping the floor either late Thursday night or early Friday morning, Lodle said.
After someone noticed the rag they were using was changing colors, they contacted the fire department who deemed the chemicals "incompatible," at which point Racine hazmat crews were called, Lodle said.

An adult day care center employee handling a blood pressure monitor dropped and broke the device's glass mercury-filled channel, spilling a small amount of mercury in the process.
The Fair Lawn Rescue Squad and the Bergen County Hazardous Materials Response Team responded to a mercury spill at the Broadway Adult Medical Day Care Center Saturday afternoon.

FIRE CREWS DEAL WITH CHEMICAL SPILL

Fire crews were called to deal with a chemical spill at an industrial unit in Rushenden this afternoon.
They went to Argent Road at 1.15pm after a container started leaking what is believed to be hydrochloric acid.
No one has been hurt but three fire engines, an incident support unit and the Environment Agency were sent to the scene.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and specialist suits were there until 3.40pm making the area safe. Specialist officers were also there to analyse and determine the chemicals.

Five people were treated at Akron hospitals Saturday after a fire involving chemicals in a University of Akron science lab.
Akron firefighters received a report at 9:36 a.m. of fire and fumes at the College of Arts and Sciences building at 290 E. Buchtel Ave. They arrived three minutes later, finding smoke in one room and fumes in other rooms.
The fire had apparently already been extinguished when firefighters arrived, according to a dispatcher.
UA, in a notice on its website, described the fire as a "small flash fire" and said it was extinguished quickly. The notice said the Akron Fire Department evacuated the building as a safety precaution. "Proper ventilation in the building has been restored, no rooms were damaged, and the building as a whole has reopened for business," UA said in the notice, issued before noon.
UA spokeswoman Laura Massie said that by late Saturday afternoon, two undergraduate students, a graduate student, professor and UA police officer had been released from area hospitals. Three were treated at Akron General Medical Center and two were treated at Akron City Hospital.
The chemicals involved in the incident were carbon disulfide and stearic acid, according to the dispatcher.
Carbon disulfide, a highly flammable liquid, is used in various industrial and agricultural processes. Stearic acid is a naturally occurring acid used in the manufacture of candles and cosmetics, among other products.
The lab, which was closed Saturday afternoon, has a sign outside identifying it as a "soils research lab."

BURLINGTON, Wis. (AP) Ñ Chemical fumes at a Burlington elementary school have sent a dozen people to the hospital.
Firefighters arrived at St. Mary's Grade School about 10:20 a.m. Friday.
Fire officials tell WTMJ-TV (http://bit.ly/QCauOZ) that workers had mixed a couple of cleaning solutions that are not supposed to be combined. It was unclear which chemicals were mixed.
About 300 students were evacuated to Catholic Central High School next door. Twelve people were treated at a hospital for inhalation of chemical fumes and eight have been released.

LOMA LINDA ER REOPENS AFTER HAZMAT SITUATION

LOMA LINDA, Calif. (KABC) -- A hazmat situation cleared an emergency room and several floors of Loma Linda Medical Center on Thursday. Patients were evacuated, complaining of dizziness and headaches.
A hospital spokesman said a construction crew had been spraying adhesive roofing material on the building, and somehow, a small amount of it got into the fresh air intake.
As doctors set up a triage in front of the emergency room, many patients were taken by wheelchair off the property around lunch time. It was all a precaution, but for a while, many people didn't know where the smell was coming from.
It was enough for them to close down part of the emergency room, leaving some people who wanted to get into the hospital wondering what to do next.

PHOSPHOROUS GRENADE INJURES 13 IN UK

A grenade left over from the second World War left 13 people needing hospital treatment in England.
The casualties were exposed to toxic fumes after workmen disturbed the stockpile of phosphorous grenades left in the sealed-up cellar of a property in Bamber Bridge near Preston, Lancashire.
It is thought one of the grenades, issued to members of the Home Guard during the war, was dislodged and cracked, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said. The devices, glass bottles about eight inches long, were intended to release a highly flammable mixture of phosphorus and benzene after being thrown, self-igniting on exposure to air.
They were to be used by reservists against Nazi occupiers if Britain had fallen to German invasion, but had lain forgotten for almost 70 years in the sealed-off cellar of a former fire station, now used as a printing firm premises. A further six such devices were found in cellar space which had been bricked up for some years.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A worker in a chemistry lab at 46 Amaral St. was injured Thursday afternoon when a glass flask exploded in his hand, the fire marshal said.
Fire Marshal Capt. Oscar M. Elmasian said the worker suffered serious cuts on his left hand and cuts on his chest and head. He was taken to a hospital, Elmasian said.
The police were called to block off the area, and officials from the state fire marshal's office, the R.I. Department of Environmental Management and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration responded.
Elmasian said investigators are looking at the chemicals in the flask and the flask itself to determine the cause of the explosion.

A teacher at Albert Gallatin High School in Fayette County remains hospitalized since last week when she was burned in an accident in a chemistry lab.
Superintendent Carl Bezjak and high school Principal Jason Hutchinson confirmed that chemistry teacher Bethany Herman suffered burns to her hands in the Oct. 10 incident.
"We had a chemical spill in a chemistry room closet. No students were involved," Hutchinson said Thursday.
The chemical, which Hutchinson described as "acid-based," was recovered and contained.
Bezjak said the container apparently had a leak.
The incident happened shortly before 7 a.m., before classes started, Hutchinson said.
The spill was cleaned, the room was ventilated, and the chemical has been removed from the classroom, he said.
