A YEAR after a waste depot fire terrified nearby residents they still fear for their safety, writes Laurie Churchman
GRAHAM Ennis was asleep on the night of the Hollingdean waste depot fire. He woke with his eyes burning and his face covered in ash.
The 75-year-old had taken sleeping pills, and breathed in smoke for more than an hour before he realised what was happening.
A blaze had broken out inside the Hollingdean Lane waste transfer station in Brighton.
Fire crews battled to bring it under control for 12 hours on August 25 last year, as fumes from burning rubbish billowed into the neighbouring Dudeney Lodge tower block.
Graham remembers stumbling over to his window and seeing flames around the depot.
‰??All hell was breaking loose,‰?? he said. ‰??Our block got the full blast.‰??
He inhaled so much smoke he had to go to hospital, and was diagnosed with a chemical lung condition.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to a hazardous material incident Friday afternoon in the 100 block of Sidney Smith Street.
The building had readings of 35 parts per million of ammonia. Crews evacuated the building and then ventilated the structure.
No injuries were reported.

Mahfuz Emran: The authorities are not following their own decision in preventing recurrence of devastating fire incidents for chemical like the Churihatta and Nimtoli fire tragedies in the old Dhaka.
A research of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) conducted from October 2019 to August 2020 published recently titled, ‰??Nimtoli, Churihatta and Afterwards: Governance Challenges in Ensuring Fire Safety in Old Dhaka and Way-out.‰??
TIB has found that there is a transparency gap in compensation of these tragedies. Besides, the culprits of the Nimtoli and Churihatta tragedies have not faced legal action yet.
‰??After the Churihatta fire incident in 2019, the issue or renewing of licences of chemical business continues in old Dhaka by unfair means through political influence, paying unauthorised money and collusion of a portion of officials of the concerned authorities,‰?? according to TIB research.
Dr Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of TIB said, ‰??There is a lack of political will over the removal of chemical warehouses from old Dhaka. Irregularities and malpractices are effectively used for operating these. Some unscrupulous businesses, part of the law enforcement agencies and officials in the concerned department are involved in such corruption.‰??

SHECU RELEASES FOUR ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR CAMPUS SAFETY

In its commitment to provide a healthy and safe working environment for the CU community, Chulalongkorn University‰??s Center for Safety, Health and Environment of Chulalongkorn University (SHECU), is determined to make Chula a zero-accident organization by 2021.
On 26 May 2020, SHECU released four announcements on the standard practices of managing occupational safety and health in a working environment, and guidelines on radiation safety, chemical safety, and biosafety and biosecurity.
Professor Tirayut Vilaivan, Director at SHECU, reveals that in the past the safety on campus was managed by individual faculties and departments, causing the measures to lack consistency in practice. By 2016, the University established the Center for Safety, Health and Environment of Chulalongkorn University to promote and drive health and safety policies on campus.
Following the Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment Act in 2011, the University established a work safety management system that complied accordingly to the provisions. The four announcements released set clear guidelines to standardize the safety practices across campus. The four announcements are:
1. Guidelines on Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Management
2. Guidelines on Chemical Safety, Health and Environment
3. Guidelines on Radiation Safety, Health and Environment
4. Guidelines on Biosafety and Biosecurity

‰??In retrospect, knowing what I know now, I should have notified the superintendent,‰?? Collins told the School Committee. ‰??I didn‰??t realize that this was going to result in craters. I did not realize that it was going to result in the scattered debris that it did.‰??
Collins came to the meeting to outline what happened in response to School Committee Chairman George Schmidt‰??s appearance before the Board of Selectmen on Monday, expressing his displeasure about the miscommunication.
‰??For an event to happen, and wait 24 hours before the school superintendent was notified, is unacceptable,‰?? Schmidt said. ‰??I don‰??t understand what went wrong. I don‰??t expect it to happen again.‰??
Collins spoke about the safety and security considerations behind the controlled detonation.
‰??I will attempt to put this into a clear perspective for you, but shall not compromise an ongoing investigation that may lead to criminal charges,‰?? he said.
On Aug. 28, the Mashpee Police and Fire departments responded to a residence after a report of a person with facial burns, Collins said. They found materials that required calling investigators from the state fire marshal‰??s office.
Members of the Explosive Ordnance Division also responded, and personnel seized, stabilized and secured items that Collins said were considered to be improvised explosive devices or homemade fireworks.
‰??I give full credit to these true professionals who walk into the face of potential danger and take their responsibilities seriously, and then make decisions and take actions to ensure public safety is preserved,‰?? Collins said.
Collins said the explosive devices required safe removal as well as detonation.
‰??Had this not occurred swiftly, the consequences at the residences were dangerous and potentially devastating,‰?? he said.

Police responded to a hazmat situation Thursday night in southwest Oklahoma City.
Three people were found in critical condition at a home located in the 1500 block of SW 82nd St.
EMSA units responded to the scene. Officials with the Oklahoma City Fire Department said it appears the three victims may have overdosed on drugs.
Hazmat continues to investigate, but said there are no gas leaks.
