PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) ‰?? Firefighters responded to Rhode Island College Tuesday for reports of a Freon leak in the basement of a dining hall on campus, Providence fire officials tell Eyewitness News.
The leak was reported around 1 p.m. at the Donovan Dining Hall. After crews arrived on scene to assess the situation, they requested a Hazmat team to investigate.
The entire building was evacuated while the leak was being checked, but has since been contained.

Reports at 2:40 p.m. of a rear-end collision involving two semis on Interstate 65 southbound, just north of the Lafayette Avenue exit, were not initially alarming. However, when officers arrived they discovered that one of the semis, a tanker operated by Quest Liner out of southern Indiana, was carrying a toxic chemical called acetic anhydride. This highly corrosive chemical can severely irritate the skin, eyes, nose, throat and possibly cause lung damage.
Center Township Fire Department firefighter Casey Samson said full suits, respirators, gloves and boots were required. A risk of the chemical starting a fire was high and there were 5,000 gallons of it in the damaged tanker. The chemical turned a simple rear-end accident into a major hazardous material or hazmat response. Shutdowns occurred on I-65 in both directions twice over the next 15 hours.

EL PASO, Texas ‰?? A chemical mishap at an El Paso Water lab on Tuesday sent an employee to the hospital.
The El Paso Fire Department responded to the International Water Quality Lab at 11:15 a.m. at 4100 Delta Drive.
One patient was transported to a hospital for evaluation.
The water company, in a statement sent to ABC-7, described the incident as ‰??an unintended chemical reaction.‰??
‰??The chemical reaction resulted in the discharge of fire retardant and the lab was evacuated,‰?? the statement read.
The employee did not appear to be injured, the water company added.
Lab operations resumed within a few hours.

A massive toxic inferno at a chemical waste facility in Melbourne resulted in criminal charges being brought ‰?? but now one of the key players has died.
Paul Anthony Bristow, the director of Bradbury Industrial Services, was personally facing 10 charges put by the Environment Protection Authority over the terrifying fire.
He was the sole shareholder of the company, which has since been put into administration.

Mr Bristow was due to appear in court on September 9 but has died, lawyer Vincent Azzopardi told the court.
Barrels of burning waste were sent flying into the sky in the massive blaze at the company‰??s Campbellfield factory in Melbourne‰??s north on April 5 last year.
Two workers were injured when the chemical drums exploded.
Smoke choked surrounding suburbs from the toxic blaze that burned at the factory for days before it was put out in a mammoth effort from emergency services.

Environmentalists are sounding alarms over a multi-year plan to dig up highly volatile sludge at a toxic chemical dump in Bridgewater, New Jersey. The American Cyanamid Superfund site has long been designated as one of the nation‰??s most poisonous chemical waste repositories.
But this summer, pharmaceutical giant Pfizer began its first efforts to dig up and transport volatile organic compounds (VOCs) resting at the bottom of two lagoons next to the Raritan River. The lagoons are filed with 44,700 tons of "acid tar" which the EPA labels Principal Threat Waste ‰?? meaning the material presents a significant risk to human health.
"The simple act of digging into that material could cause an exothermic reaction. In other words a giant chemical explosion," said Robert Spiegel, Director of Edison Wetlands Association, a watchdog that monitors Superfund sites in New Jersey. "They have no idea the witch's brew of different poisons that make up these two giant impoundments."

A woman is recovering from minor injuries after a small chemical explosion at the University of Victoria (UVic) on Sunday evening.
Paramedics and firefighters responded to a call about ‰??a small explosion‰?? at the Bob Wright Centre, UVic‰??s ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences building, around 4:45 p.m. on Aug. 23, according to a spokesperson for BC Emergency Health Services. One person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
A student was working on a research project in a chemistry lab when a small explosion occurred in a flask, shattering the glass and cutting her hand, explained Deputy Chief Dan Wood of the Saanich Fire Department. There was no fire and that the chemicals that caused the explosion weren‰??t toxic, he said. The materials were neutralized by firefighters.
