Ghaziabad: Seven women and a man were charred to death while eleven women were injured in a major blaze at a makeshift factory manufacturing party poppers at Bakharwa village in Modinagar town of Ghaziabad Sunday evening. Taking cognizance of the incident, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath directed the district magistrate and the senior superintendent of police to rush to the spot and submit a report by Sunday night.
Officials of the fire department said the factory had a mass of hydrocarbons and manufactured items stocked at the complex which caught fire around 4pm on Sunday. Fire officials, asking not to be named, said the factory had no permission to operate.
Teams of forensic experts were roped in to ascertain the exact cause of fire.
‰??The CM has taken cognisance of the incident and asked us to conduct an immediate inquiry. We have found laxity on part of the local police post in-charge as he was prima facie expected to have knowledge about the operation of the factory. The CM has directed for compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the victims. I have also directed for a magisterial inquiry. An FIR will also be lodged against the person who was operating the factory and they will be sent to jail,‰?? district magistrate Ajay Shankar Pandey told reporters at Bakharwa village.

(CBS4) ‰?? The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment recently announced the results of extensive testing of the state‰??s water sources for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, more commonly referred to as PFAS or ‰??forever chemicals.‰??
A coalition of pro-environment organizations, however, criticized the state‰??s report for using ‰??dangerously out of date‰?? guidelines for public health.
The entire family of the chemicals numbers in the thousands, but Perfluorooctane sulfonate and Perfluorooctanoic acid in particular found use in industrial applications and in firefighting foam. The foam was mostly used by fire departments at airports and military bases to smother airplane or jet fuel fires.

GRAND FORKS FIRE CREWS DISPATCHED FOR HAZMAT RELEASE

The Grand Forks Fire Department responded Saturday to a hazardous material release on the north side of the city.
According to a release sent by the fire department, crews were dispatched at approximately 8 a.m. to Simplot, at 3630 Gateway Dr., after a leak occurred in a freezer area. Approximately 100 pounds of anhydrous ammonia was released.
The department responded with three fire engines, a hazmat response vehicle, a decontamination trailer and a command unit. The fire department release said Simplot personnel were able to slow the leak from their equipment room and GFFD assisted by making entry for testing the level of the released product. The building was ventilated.

GUILFORD ‰?? The Guilford Fire Department is warning people to be careful with portable chargers containing lithium-ion batteries after one caught fire and exploded Wednesday afternoon, according to a release on the department‰??s website.
The charger was sitting on a semi-non-combustible surface and no one was injured, said Deputy Fire Marshal Jim Considine.
Considine advised people to keep those chargers away from combustible items such as sofas and beds.
They should not be left unattended while plugged in, and users should follow the manufacturer‰??s instructions regarding charging times, he said.

Another 500 residents have filed lawsuits against Watson Grinding & Manufacturing, the company behind an early-morning explosion in January that killed two workers and damaged hundreds of nearby homes.
The new claims were filed as an important deadline nears: After July 8 ‰?? next Wednesday ‰?? residents will no longer be able to file against Watson Grinding and its affiliated company, Watson Valve. An attorney for those companies did not respond to a request for comment.
The latest plaintiffs include adults and their unnamed children, who allege the Jan. 28 blast completely or partially damaged their homes or businesses, according to attorney Robert Kwok, who now represents more than 900 people affected by the explosion.
