This Saturday afternoon, a blast and smoke coming from an apartment disrupted the town of Orcutt. By the time officials arrived, a seriously injured resident was already being transported by American Medical Response. Deputies found that a sliding door had been blasted off the rails from the explosion and evidence to believe the apartment was used as a butane honey oil lab.

Santa Maria resident Albert Alvarado was later arrested and charged with four felonies and one misdemeanor. His charges include child endangerment and arson causing injury, among others. He is being held in Santa Barbara County Jail for $500,000 bail, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

A fire on the exterior of the Atlas Minerals & Chemicals plant in Longswamp Township that kept about 50 firefighters busy for several hours Monday was ruled accidental by a state police fire marshal on Tuesday.

The fire was the result of a malfunction of the power unit on a sulphur scrubber, a large piece of machinery that processes sulphur for industrial uses, Trooper Janssen Herb said.

The fire itself was relatively small and physical damage was minimal compared to the economic impact on the plant at 1227 Valley Road, which shut down for most of the afternoon, Herb said. He couldn‰??t provide a damage estimate.

Plant officials couldn‰??t be reached for comment, and it was unclear if the plant resumed full operations.

KOCHI: Nearly a year after the massive fire outbreak at Brahmapuram waste treatment plant, there was a similar incident on Tuesday when heaps of plastic waste dumped adjacent to the plant caught fire.
The fire, which started from the heaps of plastic around 3.15 pm, spread thick fumes around the area, triggering another round of panic among the residents.

Around 15 firefighting units from Thrikkakara, Pattimattom, Gandhinagar, Mattanchery, Tripunithura, Aluva and Club Road fire stations worked for nearly four hours to douse the fire.Apart from this, water tanker lorries and earth movers were also brought to the site to douse the flames.Though the preliminary inquiry suggested that a chemical reaction resulted in the fire, Fire and Rescue Services officers ruled out this. According to them, the fire that broke out is a man-made one.

‰?? This is not the first time that the Brahmapuram plant is witnessing such kind of fire. We had suggested the corporation officials keep a fire line, hydrant and also a ring road,‰?? said A S Jogy, district fire officer.
‰??But it is sad to note that the situation is similar to last year. No lessons have been learned from it. Since the wind direction has started changing, thick fog will cover the city,‰?? he said.

Shimla, Feb 17 (PTI) Five class 12 students sustained injuries in an explosion inside the chemistry laboratory of a school here on Monday, a district official said.

The explosion took place at the Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS) Matiana of Theog sub-division in Shimla during the class 12 Chemistry board practical examination, he said. Prima facie, it is suspected that the explosion occurred as the students wrongly combined magnesium nitrate and ferrous sulphate, the school principal informed in writing to the Theog sub divisional magistrate.

Sources said the laboratory has been sealed and the incident is being investigated.

The injured students were taken to primary health centre (PHC) Matiana where they were provided first aid.

Four of the students--Ajit, Mukul Panchta, Bunty Sharma and Nikita Verma-- were referred to the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) Shimla, the official said.

It happened as Erie Police and the SWAT team attempted to serve a search warrant in the 1100 block of E. 20th St. just before 10 a.m.

The suspect - who has since been identified as Timothy Belczyk, 41 - ran into the basement and dumped chemicals suspect to be used to make meth down a drain, police said. It started a chemical reaction and fire.

Belczyk was taken into custody, and the fire department was called to the scene.

The drug and vice unit will be going into the home to retrieve evidence once the scene is cleared by the Pennsylvania State Police Clandestine Laboratory Response Team.

A small quantity of suspected meth, suspected meth lab and sawed-off shotgun was recovered from inside the home, according to police.

EXTENSIVE CHEMICAL SAFETY FRAUD UNCOVERED AT GERMAN TESTING LABORATORY

Tags: Germany, laboratory, discovery, environmental, pesticides, pharmaceutical

The case of an animal rights activist who infiltrated an independent German chemical testing laboratory has triggered the discovery of an apparently extensive chemical testing fraud.

LPT Hamburg, with around 175 employees, is one of the largest contract laboratories in Germany. It is a family owned private company. It prepares regulatory studies on behalf of the pharmaceutical and pesticide industries and has three locations: MienenbÌ1Ú4ttel in Lower Saxony, Neugraben in Hamburg and Wankendorf in Schleswig-Holstein.

An initial case of fraud was reported in 2019 by the German magazine FAKT, which worked with the animal rights organisations Cruelty Free International and SOKO-Tierschutz to expose the findings of the undercover employee. The disturbing irregularities they discovered included the death and replacement of animals without this being reported to authorities.
