Hi Daniel:

You've gotten good advice from others.  I offer the following resources from our campus policies and my department guidance:

https://ucdavispolicy.ellucid.com/documents/view/335/355/  Service and support animals

https://ucdavispolicy.ellucid.com/documents/view/333/2079/  Animal control on campus

https://chemistry.ucdavis.edu/sites/g/files/dgvnsk196/files/files/page/needs-assessment_0.pdf  Needs assessment for students with disabilities (last two pages deal with service dogs in lab)

As Pat pointed out, cancelling class when a service animal presented may be in violation of reasonable accommodations in the ADA regulations.

Hope this helps,

Debbie

I believe this is the first time we've encountered something like this and I called our disability department and they really couldn't answer the question. I appreciate the help.

Hi Daniel - This topic has been covered on the list (http://www.ilpi.com/dchas/index.search). Our division has presented symposiums and has a published book in the ACS Symposium Series on the topic (https://pubs.acs.org/isbn/9780841232761).

It is very confusing to me as to why the instructor canceled lab?  The regulations are well established for accommodations of service animals (https://www.ada.gov/service_animals_2010.htm).

I would suggest you consult with your institution's office of disabilities (may be another name at your school).

Hello,

My name is Daniel and I have lab safety question. One of our students brought a PTSD service dog to one of our physics labs. The instructor had to cancel lab until further notice. Could someone please share rules or regulations in terms of lab safety.
