Hello Barbara,
We do not allow students to wear leggings/jeggings/tights in our labs. We do a safety PowerPoint briefing that includes this information on the first day of lab. I explain to the students the reasoning behind this rule, essentially the fit makes it easy for spilled chemical to be absorbed rather quickly and have skin exposure. We also explain how some chemicals are able to reach with the Lycras or synthetic fabric the leggings are made of and that would create an emergency if one was splashed while wearing them. We include pictures of examples of all clothing and footwear that in inappropriate to wear to lab so there is a "visual" representation so to speak to match our words. Hope this helps.

Regards,
Denise

Safety Colleagues,

Do you permit your students to wear leggings/jeggings in your academic chemistry labs?

If not, have you included a section on this in your safety rules?

Would you be willing to share the wording in your safety rules with me?

I chair the departmental safety committee and I plan to include this topic as an agenda item for the February meeting.

As always, thank you for your assistance.

Barbara
