Hi Beth,

I was responsible for a lab complex with over 350 labs.  We saw many things happen to the duct work moving air away from the hoods.  There was build up of oily substances on the inside of ducts.  We also had a number of researchers who were doing heated acid baths.  That caused some of our ducts to fail because the acids would eventually destroy the SS ductwork.  You need to have each lab PI do a lab PSM review to assist in determining where risks may be.

Has anyone experienced accumulation of oil (perhaps mineral oil from a heated oil bath?) in fume hood duct work? Is this reasonable or even possible? Could a sufficient amount remain in the system for it to condense out in the ducts when the exhaust fans were turned off for an extended period?
