Monona - there is a joint effort by CHAS, Corporate Associates, CCS, and the ACS Office of Professional Education to develop the course you’re referring to, which will be known as the ACS Course on Chemical Safety. We began this effort back in 2012, but have not been able to secure all of the funding necessary for production and implementation.
The course outline has been developed, with 11 modules covering different areas of laboratory safety. Approximately 35 Subject Matter Experts have contributed work product for the modules; that work is being completed. We are working with ACS on securing the funding necessary to complete the conversion to an online format, but have not selected a Learning Management System platform yet. The course will be interactive, with a test at the end of each module which the student must pass before moving forward. Students will receive a Certificate of Completion when they have finished the course.
Obviously, establishing the target audience when there are so many potential sub-markets for this course has been difficult. The primary focus has been on the needs at the graduate student level, since the impetus was largely industry groups indicating that new-hires are frequently coming unprepared to the workplace from a lab safety perspective. While we believe this course could be attractive at the undergraduate level, we don’t want to compromise or compete with lab safety education as part of the college curricula, which many universities handle extremely well.

Are you aware of a safety certification training course for the college/university chemistry laboratory? A colleague of mine is researching it for the county college. I sent him to the ACS website, and there is a lot of information, but not a separate course. I know you have sent me links in the past for ACS webinars. Do you know of a laboratory safety training course that college students can take online and receive a certificate of completion? Flinn has them for MS and HS, but not college level.
