I have a fair amount of experience with service dogs in teaching labs and have developed a guidance document to help facilitate the conversation. Here:
http://chemistry.ucdavis.edu/safety/files/student-with-disability-guideline-final.pdf
I’ve found that well-trained service dogs will accept booties and a lab coat without a squawk. Goggles (doggles?) are typically not well-accepted and handlers are willing to take the risk. We assign a workstation
that’s as far from the traffic pattern as possible – on the corner is optimum – that gives the dog more space. We use plastic-backed paper for the dog to sit/lay on and if they’re “spot” trained, it makes it easy to keep the dog on their “spot.” No dog beds
allowed.
The guidance is based in part on the campus policy on service animals, adjusted to our unique needs in laboratory. I haven’t had anyone ask to bring a service animal into the research lab.
Hope this helps,
Debbie
