UPDATE: METH LAB ON MT. LEHMAN ROAD DESCRIBED AS 'LARGE SCALE'
Tags: Canada, public, discovery, response, meth_lab

Police are investigating what they describe as a "large-scale" meth lab at a home in the 1700 block of Mt. Lehman Road.

Members of the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) drug squad executed a search warrant at the residence yesterday (Monday). Based on what was found at the scene, they called in the RCMP clandestine lab enforcement and response team and Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service hazmat response, who arrived this morning (Tuesday) and are expected to be there all day as evidence is collected.

The RCMP forensic identification unit and BC Ambulance personnel were also called to the scene.

MacDonald said the chemicals found in the home were of great concern.

"The environment of the residence was extremely toxic, dangerous and presented severe public safety risks prior to this intervention by law enforcement," said Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services say workers at a North Inkster Park trucking company had to be evacuated from their workplace twice Monday in separate incidents of dangerous leaks.
Hazmat teams went into Day and Ross Transportation, on the 200 block of Haggart Street at 5:19 p.m. after a call that R12 refrigerant was leaking from pressurized cylinders.
A second call for leaking cylinders came in at 10:59 pm. Monday at the same location.
A spokesperson for the fire department says both times the Hazmat teams were able to stop the leaking gas and restore air quality and workers went back in.
The cause of the leaks is under investigation.

woman and her three-year-old daughter, found dead in their still-running SUV on Florida's Turnpike in June, died after inhaling hydrogen sulfide, the medical examiner's office has ruled.

The pungent, colorless gas may have come from the car battery in the Porsche Cayenne SUV, though officials will need to do more tests to know for sure, said Carrie Proudfit, a spokeswoman for the Orange-Osceola Medical Examiner's Office.

Latifa Lincoln, 46, and Maksmilla Lincoln, 3, were found dead on June 2, after the SUV bumped into a guardrail on Florida's Turnpike and came to a full stop north of mile marker 224 in Osceola County. They were driving to Miami, according to a voicemail Lincoln left before her death.

Their deaths remained unexplained for months as officials investigated and waited for toxicology results.

A Florida Highway Patrol trooper and two Osceola County deputies walked up to the SUV and saw that the two didn't seem to be breathing, according to their reports. The engine was still running. Lincoln was in the driver's seat, and her daughter was buckled into a child's seat in the back.

CHEMICAL CONTAMINATION TESTS URGED ON BRISBANE'S NORTHSIDE AFTER POULTRY DEATHS

Chemicals leaching from a suspected old dump site on Brisbane's northside are linked to the deaths from cancerous lesions of 20 prize hens, an experienced bird veterinarian says.

Questions are now being asked because new homes are being built where the runoff flows.

Residents on Brisbane's northside say the death of 20 show chickens from cancerous lesions is linked to water leaching from old chemical pits at Dakabin that were build in the 1930s.
Brisbane bird vet Dr Adrian Gallagher says he believes the Marsden Road, Dakabin, scenario is a modern-day "canary in a coal mine" and has urged the Queensland government's Contaminated Land Unit and Moreton Bay Council to urgently investigate and properly cap what he believes is toxic leachate.

"I think, from a human health perspective, if we have these uncapped, or poorly capped toxic waste sites ‰?? that we are building on ‰?? I think people should know about it," Dr Gallagher said.

"I feel that the likelihood that the chemical exposure, being the initial damage that resulted in this cancer developing, is still high."

Both the Contaminated Land Unit and Moreton Bay Council insist they have no record of a dump which became the sports fields behind Dakabin State High School. Some local residents have said they are shocked to discover this.

COPS RAID NEWCASTLE HOME OVER 'CHEMICAL BOMB THREAT'
Tags: United_Kingdom, public, follow-up, response, fireworks

A MAN held in custody for six months after police discovered improvised explosive devices in his flat has been released after they were found to be homemade fireworks for Bonfire Night.

Mark Gilhespy, 50, was arrested in March after police raided his home following a tip off that he had ordered a number of chemicals from eBay.

Mark Gilhespy was arrested in March and held in custody for six months after police discovered explosives in his home
Concerns grew when officers found 12 explosive devices wrapped in electrical tape stored in the loft of his flat in West Denton, Newcastle.

However it turned out that the flash powder devices were in fact homemade explosives created for Gilhespy‰??s sister‰??s firework party the year before, but they were stored away after a disappointing test run.

The extra chemicals that had been purchased were actually being used for ‰??simple experiments‰?? from an A-Level chemistry book because the accused was interested in science, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

Prosecutor Jolyon Perks told the court: ‰??Chemicals were also present, as were other items, including chemistry items.

SOUTHINGTON COMPANY WON‰??T FACE FINE FOR CHEMICAL SPILL, MUST REIMBURSE EMERGENCY SERVICES MYRECORDJOURNAL.COM |
Tags: us_CT, public, follow-up, response, metals

SOUTHINGTON ‰?? Light Metal Coloring has been billed just over $45,000 by the fire and police departments for a chemical spill that occurred in late August. While the company must reimburse local emergency response agencies and a cleanup company, it won‰??t face fines for the spill.

On Aug. 24, 350 gallons of hexavalent chromium spilled from a tank on the roof of Light Metal Coloring, at 270 Spring St. Some of the chemical flowed from the building to a nearby storm drain and into the Quinnipiac River.

The company reimbursed the Southington Fire Department $29,633 for costs incurred in responding to the spill.

HIGHWAY 316 SHUT DOWN DUE TO HAZMAT SITUATION
Tags: us_GA, transportation, release, injury, pool_chemicals

BARROW COUNTY - Highway 316 at Kilcrease Road has reopened after an accident caused hazardous chemicals to spill.

The crash happened just before 7 a.m. on Monday.

Captain Scott Dakin with Barrow County Emergency Services said three vehicles were involved. One of the vehicles, a pick-up truck, was carrying pool cleaning supplies. The impact of the crash caused the chemicals including hydrochloric acid, muriatic acid, chlorine and sodium bicarb to spill and mix together. Drivers avoided the area for most of the morning. "We are on the scene of a motor vehicle collision at this intersection. The accident also involves a hazardous material incident which has caused us to shut down the area," Cpt. Dakin said.

Two people were taken to the hospital. One suffered injuries from the accident, the other person is being treated as a result of the hazmat spill.

SHAWBURY, England‰??Smithers Rapra‰??s Shawbury facility is back in operation following a Sept. 23 fire that damaged the facility‰??s product testing laboratory. According to the firm, the work done in the laboratory accounts for less than 10 percent of the production at the facility.

‰??The Smithers Rapra team, led by Vice President of European Operations Sam Sheppard Fidler, stepped in immediately and, along with the courageous professionals from the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service that responded to the scene, were able to minimize the damage,‰?? Smithers Rapra President Nat Leonard said. ‰??Thanks to the commitment of the team and the support of the entire Smithers organization, we were able to confirm the safety of the facility and quickly get back to work serving our clients.‰??

NO RISK TO RESIDENTS DURING HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL REMOVAL, ECAN SAYS
Tags: New_Zealand, public, discovery, environmental, waste

There is no risk to residents during the cleanup of the contaminated site in Timaru, Environment Canterbury (ECan) says.

It follows the concerns of a resident who lives within 150 metres of the Concours Electroplating site near North St.

The resident, who did not wish to be named, said he was not informed of the cleanup until Tuesday, when the cleanup began.

However, ECan said residents have nothing to worry about.

In an emailed statement, ECan contaminated sites team leader Davina McNickel said it "hand delivered" information about the removal to residents and about 20 businesses adjacent to the site on September 29.

Environment Minister Nick Smith visited the Chrome Platers building earlier this year, when he announced almost $1 million towards the cleanup project.

It then posted letters to 156 properties within a 250m radius on Monday.

They should reach addresses on Tuesday, she said.

It did not provide early notice to residents within the 200m surrounding area because it did not consider "there to be any risk to surrounding properties".

Those involved in the removal process would be wearing protective clothing and equipment because they would be working inside the building and handling chemicals, she said.

"We notified residents because we didn't want them to be concerned if they saw that happening without prior warning, but we are not concerned that there will be any risk to residents from this removal process."

In the letter to residents dated October 3, it explained that the removal was a "staged process" and would involve the removal of hazardous substances, a site wash down, a building hygiene inspection, and a contaminated land investigation.

AL WATER UTILITY SUING 32 DALTON CARPET & CHEMICAL MAKERS
Tags: us_AL, public, discovery, response, toxics

GADSDEN, Ala. ‰?? NewsChannel 9 has learned that the Gadsden, Alabama Water Authority is suing 32 Dalton carpet makers and chemical suppliers, saying the companies are contaminating their water supply.

Gadsden Water alleges the carpet companies discharged toxic chemicals (perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonate) upstream of their water intake site.

The utility claims the chemicals cannot be removed by their water treatment processes and their customers are now turning to alternate drinking sources, resulting in lost sales.

NewsChannel 9 reached out to all 32 companies named in the lawsuit. Not all of them have responded back, but those who have said they don‰??t comment on active litigation.

ARCHDALE NEIGHBORHOODS EVACUATED AFTER CHEMICAL REACTION AT A&D ENVIRONMENTAL
Tags: us_NC, industrial, release, response, unknown_chemical, sodium_bicarbonate

ARCHDALE ‰?? Multiple neighborhoods were evacuated after a chemical reaction at an Archdale environmental plant Monday evening.
The reaction was reported at 5:39 p.m. at A&D Environmental Services at 2718 Uwharrie Road, according to the Journal's news-gathering partner WGHP/FOX8.
Residents of Circle Drive, Circle Drive Extension, Bowen Drive and a portion of Uwharrie Road have been told to evacuate because of the reaction, High Point Fire Department firefighters told the TV station.
Glenn Clapp, manager of the City of High Point Office of Emergency Management, said the reaction happened when sodium bicarbonate, which was in a covered area outside of the building, reacted with an unknown chemical and caused a vapor to go into the air.
Clapp said the vapor could be potentially harmful so about 35 homes in the area were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Air quality testing was done in neighborhoods and there was nothing harmful found, Clapp said.
Crews cleaned up the scene and loaded the sodium bicarbonate into a truck.

LABUAN: A broken thermometer caused a scare at a secondary school.

A total of three students were exposed to mercury after the thermometer fell to the ground and shattered at the laboratory in SM Sains Labuan.

Labuan Fire and Rescue Department director Zainal Madasin said the students were sent to the Labuan Nucleus Hospital for treatment following the accident at about 7.30am.

The Form One students of the school were carrying out an experiment when the accident happened.

‰??A hazmat (hazardous materials) team was rushed to the school after being notified of the accident.

About 20 students, a teacher and a lab assistant were present when the accident happened.

‰??The hazmat team decontaminated the lab in a two-hour operation, said Zainal. ‰?? Bernama

HAZMAT SPILL CLOSES BOLIVAR POST OFFICE FRIDAY MORNING
Tags: us_TN, transportation, release, response, diesel

BOLIVAR, Tenn. ‰?? A hazmat spill early Friday morning in Bolivar has been cleared after temporarily causing the post office to close.

Employees had to evacuate the building because of the spill. The Bolivar Fire Department, EMA and even first responders from Madison County responded to the hazmat scare along Market Street after a spill inside a mail delivery truck.

Fire officials said the driver spilled diesel fuel and tried to clean it up with cat litter, coffee grinds and moth balls.

‰??And he figured he can clean it and make it smell better by doing that, and he really didn‰??t know he was just mixing lots of stuff together just to give out an odor,‰?? Chief Lynn Price of the Bolivar Fire Department said.
