If it is to accommodate a student’s special needs, we have even had it where someone else runs the experiment under the student's direction.  Obviously, the most important thing is to make sure whatever is done, that it is safe for the student.  So far, we have not run into a situation where someone can not participate at all.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Observation Only in Chemistry Lab?

Good Evening,

·         The following learning goal for a non-majors’ Chemistry class,  Perform laboratory procedures accurately to test the hypotheses and to make additional observations, would be impossible to fulfill for a student who only partially observes and records the lab work but is unable to participate.    Does anyone have experience/recommendations?  Would you assume that if other learning goals are met for the course, this one could be ignored under special conditions?

Thank you!

Ruth Ann
