In reply to yesterday's list reminders, someone replied:

The situation is that the list is configured to not allow attachments to the content of the postings. This is a long standing policy to avoid sending files that are too large to the list and to avoid concerns about viruses being shared over the list. However, some e-mails to the list are configured in such a way that they contain URL's that point to pictures and it appears that pictures appear attached to an e-mail, but are actually being read from the web by the e-mail software. So, while it is possible to point to pictures in e-mails to the list, it's not possible to send the picture itself over the list.
This is somewhat complicated by the URL screening software used by the Weill Cornell site that hosts the list; it adds a security feature to URL's posted to the list to assure that they are real URLs before distributing them. This is helpful in some cases, but also increases the likelihood of linkrot over time.
So if you would like to share pictures via the LISTSERV, the best practice is to put them on a web site someplace and put the URL in your e-mail. If you need help finding a friendly host for your pictures, let me know.
Thanks for the reminder on this.
