Lab Safety Specialist
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to administer and monitor the University research and laboratory safety program; monitor laboratory safety programs; inspect facilities; enforce safety regulations; emergency planning; investigation; assessments; and work with faculty, staff, students and other stakeholders to ensure the safety of the campus community.
Minimum Education/Experience
Four year degree with a preference for a related major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Essential Duties Summary
Provide support to research and laboratory safety programs, provide program compliance monitoring / review / inspections, provide effective communication to build partnerships across campus, provide assistance with emergency response, provide equipment calibration, conduct incident / injury investigations, perform data analysis and regulatory reporting, assist with chemical inventory management.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in Occupational Health and Safety, life science or related field. Experience with College/University safety programs. One to three years of progressive experience in research and/or laboratory safety in public or academic setting. Experience with laboratory, chemical, or radiation safety programs. Working knowledge of regulations and guidance documents such as OSHA and NIOSH. Ability to exercise sound judgment in applying and interpreting policies, procedures, and regulations. Advanced knowledge and skills in use of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Access) and the ability to gain proficiency in the use of IPads, air sampling equipment, confined space rescue equipment, and direct reading instruments. Experience with developing and delivering training.
