FIRE INJURES FIVE HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY STUDENTS

Five students and a teacher were injured in a fire at W.T. Woodson High School in Fairfax, Va., on Oct. 30. The school has released no details about the incident, but local media reports indicate that the fire happened during a chemistry class demonstration called a ??rainbow?? flame test.
The teacher ??was demonstrating the experiment ?| with the different elements causing the fire to change color, and as the fire was dying down, she added more alcohol into it,?? said one student interviewed by Fox 5 DC. ??It was like a whoosh coming out, and it was like kind of a sideways fireball.??
The fire comes amid growing concern about use of fuels such as methanol in educational demonstrations. C&EN counts that at least 46 people have been injured in similar incidents across the U.S. since September 2013.
Of those injured at Woodson, two students were flown by helicopter to area hospitals. One was released on Nov. 2, and the second was still hospitalized as of C&EN press time. The other three students were treated at a local hospital and released the day of the incident. The teacher was treated at the school.
The American Chemical Society, National Fire Protection Association, National Science Teachers Association, and Chemical Safety & Hazard Investigation Board have each issued safety alerts or recommendations to prevent similar incidents.

THREE INJURED AFTER COLUMBIA COLLEGE CHEMISTRY LAB EXPLOSION

COLUMBIA ?? Three Columbia College students were injured in a small chemistry lab explosion Thursday at the Brouder Science Center.
One student was taken to University Hospital after receiving arm and shoulder burns, Columbia College spokesman Sam Fleury said. The other two students refused transport, he said, and those affected showered immediately.
Around 1:30 p.m., a chemical reaction involving nitric acid went awry, closing the lab indefinitely. Fleury said in a press statement that the incident was contained under a hood, and the students were wearing safety glasses.
The rest of the building remained in use Thursday afternoon.
"Just a small accident," Fleury said.
Fleury said there was no damage to the lab itself but said he was unsure if the lab would be open for class by Thursday evening.

A high school chemistry class fire that injured five Virginia students and a teacher last week during a popular chemistry demonstration has prompted a wave of safety alerts across the country, with warnings to teachers about the dangers of using flammable liquids on open desks during classroom activities.
The fire, at W.T. Woodson High School in Fairfax County on Oct. 30, seriously burned two students ?? one of whom was still in the hospital Thursday ?? and sent three others to the hospital. Students who said they were in the class said the blaze started when a chemistry demonstration went awry.

The students said the teacher poured out a flammable liquid and then lit it on fire, introducing different metals to show how it changed colors in a demonstration widely known as a ??rainbow flame.?? When the flame appeared to die down, students said, the teacher poured out more liquid, causing a ??splash of fire?? that burned students. One student in the class said neither the teacher nor the students were wearing protective gear.
Officials have declined to release key details about the fire, including whether the demonstration was performed under a fume hood ?? as district safety guidelines advise ?? or what kind of liquid the teacher used.
Given the potential dangers involved, the National Science Teachers Association this week sent out a safety advisory to 68,000 science teachers telling them to ??halt the use of methanol-based flame tests on an open laboratory desk,?? referring to the liquid commonly used in such demonstrations.

PROTESTS DRIVE OUT ROMANIAN GOVERNMENT AFTER NIGHTCLUB FIRE

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) - Romania's government collapsed Wednesday after thousands of people took to the streets to protest a deadly fire at a heavy metal concert, the final straw after a five-month corruption investigation that has shaken the nation.
Prime Minister Victor Ponta said he and his government would resign "to take note of the legitimate grievances which exist in society," adding: "I hope handing in my and my government's mandate will satisfy the demands of protesters." But thousands of people turned out for new protests Wednesday evening demanding early elections and more accountability in government.
Even before last weekend's fire, the deadliest in Romania's history, Ponta faced widespread calls to resign as he was tried on charges including tax evasion, money laundering, conflict of interest and making false statements. The charges relate to activities in 2007 and 2008, when he was a lawmaker and a lawyer. Ponta denies wrongdoing.
Then came the fire Friday night at the basement Colectiv nightclub, which sent panicked people stampeding for the single exit. The death toll stands at 32, with about 130 more hospitalized, dozens of them in serious or critical condition. The club's three owners have been detained on manslaughter charges for allegedly failing to comply with fire regulations. Many Romanians also suspect authorities of taking bribes to overlook the violations.

3 STUDENTS RETURN TO SCHOOL AFTER WOODSON CHEMISTRY FIRE

FAIRFAX, Va. ?? Students returned to W.T. Woodson High In Fairfax, Virginia, Wednesday four days after five students and a teacher were injured in a fiery chemistry experiment that went awry.
??I??m just hoping school gets back to normal, because it was really scary,?? 16-year-old Austin Birkland says of the incident that evacuated the school.
Of the students who were injured, three were back in school on Wednesday. Two of the most seriously injured remain out of school and one is still in the hospital where she continues to improve and ??her spirits are high,?? Principal Scott F. Poole told the school.
The other most seriously burned teen was released from the hospital Sunday, he said.
School spokesman John Torre says Poole read a statement during morning announcements updating the student body on the injured teens.
??Both of the teachers who were in the classroom during the fire are currently on leave as they recover from what happened. One was slightly injured and is OK,?? Poole also said in his announcement.
Repairs have been completed to the classroom where the fire occurred and classes will resume there. However the 7th period chemistry class that witnessed the fire will move to another room, according to Poole??s statement.

NEIGHBORS REACT AFTER HONEY OIL LAB GOES UP IN FLAMES

OROVILLE, Calif. -
The El Medio Fire Department and the Butte County Sheriff's Office responded to a possible butane honey oil (BHO) laboratory explosion and fire Tuesday night around 8 p.m. on the 5300 block of Walmer Road.
Investigators reported that Isaiah Rutherford, 28, was manufacturing BHO in a small bathroom inside the house. At the time, there were four other adults and seven children in the home, ages 2 to 12.
In the explosion, Rutherford was the only one injured. He suffered severe burns and was driven to Oroville Hospital by one of the adults in the house. He was later transferred him to a facility in San Fransisco, and his condition is unknown.
The property manager said she had no idea so many people were living in the house and only knew of four.
Neighbors in the community said they knew all along. Rutherford's next-door neighbor said the people living in that home have been an ongoing issue.
