WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A Holiday Inn located near the intersection of Belvedere Road and Mercer Avenue was evacuated Thursday morning after a canister of bear spray, which contains pepper spray, discharged in a third-floor room.
West Palm Beach Fire Rescue said 10 people were exposed to the spray and complained of respiratory problems.
One person was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in stable condition. Nine others signed waivers saying that they did not wish to be treated.
A fire official said a cleaning staff went inside of a room and were overcome by the spray. The crew reported the odor and left the room. Other people on the floor also reported smelling it.

TWENTY TREATED IN HOSPITAL AFTER CHEMICAL LEAK AT FACTORY IN NORTHERN CHINA

Twenty people were sent to hospital for treatment after a leak of ammonia at a factory in northern China.
About 300kg of the toxic chemical synthetic ammonia leaked after a pipe broke at the plant in the city of Pingdingshan in Henan province at about 6.30am on Friday, the authorities in the Shilong district said in a statement.
The leak was brought under control 15 minutes later, the statement said.
Five of the 20 being treated at Pingdingshan First People's Hospital, mostly people living near the plant, showed symptoms of poisoning, but their injuries were not life threatening, the authorities said.
The district‰??s publicity department said tests of the air in the neighbourhood at 9.20 am had shown no traces of ammonia.
Residents reported an explosion at the factory before a heavy acrid fog covered the neighbourhood, several newspapers in Henan reported.
The district government denied there was a explosion, saying the media reports were exaggerating.

EPA‰??S GREEN CHEMISTRY AWARDS CRITICIZED

EPA‰??s Presidential Green Chemistry Awards go to efforts that eliminate the use of hazardous solvents or generation of toxic waste, save billions of gallons of water, or curb greenhouse gas emissions. But EPA‰??s internal watchdog says those claims, submitted by award applicants, may be misleading because the agency doesn‰??t verify or validate the results and the award recipients don‰??t have to conduct quality-assurance checks.
A Sept. 15 report by EPA‰??s Office of Inspector General recommends that the agency quit estimating the pollution prevention benefits reaped through the green chemistry award projects until data quality controls are in place.
What‰??s more, the inspector general‰??s report says the name of the program is misleading because awards haven‰??t gotten endorsement from the U.S. President for years. The name of the program dates to its start in 1996, under President Bill Clinton. The report recommends that the agency either rename the program or obtain ongoing presidential endorsement of the awards.
EPA responded that in the next year, it would gather information on impacts of technologies that have received the awards and will periodically assess the program to evaluate results. The agency also points out that the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy participated in the 2015 award ceremony this summer.
The awards are bestowed annually by EPA in partnership with the American Chemical Society‰??s Green Chemistry Institute. ACS publishes C&EN.
