EMERGENCY CREWS RESPOND TO HAZMAT SPILL IN OLANTA

OLANTA, SC (WMBF) ‰?? The Florence County Emergency Response Team assisted Olanta Fire when they responded to a hazardous materials spill at 432 S. Jones Road in Olanta around 1 p.m. Thursday.
According to the Florence County Emergency Management/911 Central Dispatch Facebook page, there was a leak of approximately 20 gallons of 50 percent hydrogen peroxide.
There were no injuries and the situation is under control, the Facebook page states.
The Olanta Fire Department, Florence County EMS, the Florence County Sheriff‰??s Office, the Olanta Police Department and the South Carolina Department of Transportation assisted Olanta Fire with the hazmat spill.

CHEMICAL REPS VOICE CONCERNS OVER NEW FED REGULATIONS

EFFINGHAM ‰?? Representatives of the chemical and fertilizer industry told Congressman John Shimkus that the federal government's mandates to meet massive requirements in less than six months time, simply isn't realistic.
‰??We are not here to complain about maintaining a safe workplace and a safe community,‰?? said Jamie Southard with Effingham Equity. ‰??We all live and work here. We want to comply.‰??
But, it comes down to regulations and facilities' inabilities to be in compliance in the time frame the federal government has requested. The requirement that would mandate all facilities are safe, was handed down about a month and a half ago, with the time frame of six months.
Following the meeting, Southard said, ‰??We have the Department of Ag, OSHA and EPA, all three are federal agencies that govern us. We want to comply. But, they want us to do this entire Process Safety Management program that the other three organizations already cover.‰??
Shimkus heard that the program requirements are not simple. He suggested compiling a coalition letter and mailing it to those in Washington on the proper committees, asking for more time.

EDUCATION AND WIKIPEDIA: A CHEMICAL REACTION

Among sessions ranging from phytochemistry to nanomaterials, the ACS chemical information division hosted a symposium on Wikipedia, collaboration, and education. That symposium attracted speakers from the Wikipedia community, academia, and government.
Dr. Ye Li is the chemistry librarian at the University of Michigan, and has been supporting and teaching Wikipedia assignments there. Together, we presented a workshop on contributing to Wikipedia through classrooms. ‰??Dr. Li presented lessons from her experience with courses at the University of Michigan.
In particular, she outlined how Wikipedia assignments helped her students read source material more critically. Students working with Dr. Li reported that writing articles for public review and feedback was a great motivating factor during the assignment. She found that giving students time to respond to volunteer feedback during the course of the assignment was a crucial part of the Wikipedia assignment for students.
Other presentations covered collaboration between volunteers and chemical databases like PubChem and CAS to add and validate information on chemical structures and reactions. Elsa Alvaro from Northwestern University measured the scope and scale of Wikipedia‰??s coverage of chemistry, exploring nearly 22,000 articles to show the distribution of contributions and contributors. Jian Zhang from the National Institute of Health went into greater detail on the means by which outside organizations can check the validity of information on Wikipedia. The verification fields on chemical infoboxes help ensure that Wikipedia points to the right information in the publicly available databases. Martin Walker from SUNY Potsdam gave a survey of the tools and projects developed by volunteer editors to support that collaboration.

CLEANUP UNDERWAY OF SMALL RADIOACTIVE CHEMICAL SPILL

TULSA, Okla. (AP) ‰?? Officials anticipate a cleanup to finish soon on a small, radioactive chemical spill that the University of Tulsa discovered on its North Campus last year.
State environmental quality officials are overseeing the cleanup effort of the teaspoon-sized spill of a mixture containing about a milligram of radioactive isotope cesium-137. The school learned last week of the spill and sent a campus-wide email about it Monday.
Researchers were using the cesium in multiphase flow loops, which simulate what happens when oil is pulled out of the ground, as part of a joint industry project managed by the university's research office.

CHEMICAL LEAK ON CAMPUS; TWO PEOPLE QUARANTINED

COLUMBIA ‰?? The MU Police Department was alerted to a chemical leak shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday at the Sears Greenhouse.
Two people who were immediately evacuated were quarantined, but MU spokesman Christian Basi said there was "no danger to the public."
The leak was contained to a single room at the greenhouse, Basi said.
The campus police were alerted to the leak by an individual who noticed a small amount of the methylimidazole leaking from a small container in the greenhouse earlier this evening. MU police notified the Columbia Fire Department, which arrived to assist the hazardous materials team.
The chemical, according to Basi, is used in plant breeding and research.
Stephen Potter, a battalion chief in the Fire Department, said the chemical is corrosive and that, as of 9 p.m., two individuals were going through "clean-up," which involves ensuring that the individuals are free from the chemical.

KETTERING MEIJER REOPENS AFTER CHEMICAL ODOR CAUSED EVACUATION

Earlier this morning, our store at 4075 Wilmington Pike in Kettering was closed as a precaution due to an odor resulting from an overnight remodeling project. Store leadership voluntarily closed the store while odor was cleared. Working with the Kettering Fire Department, the store was re-opened after approximately 90 minutes.

The store‰??s being remodeled, and the strong odor was caused by three different coatings construction crews applied to the floor overnight, and there wasn‰??t adequate ventilation throughout the building, said Kettering Fire Marshal Bill Ford. As a result, the fumes from the chemicals caused customers and staff to feel ill when the store opened this morning, he said, noting that no one was transported to the hospital.

YOUNGSVILLE, N.C. ‰?? Law enforcement officers were directing traffic away from the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 1 at N.C. Highway 96 in Youngsville Thursday afternoon while hazardous materials crews worked to clear what appeared to be a chemical spill from a tractor-trailer.
According to Franklin County police, a box truck spilled a corrosive chemical known at ferric chloride when it turned onto N.C. Highway 96.
Businesses in a nearby shopping center, which includes a fitness center, a McDonald's and a Food Lion, were asked to evacuate, a dentist with an office there said.

CHINA SEEKS FACTORY RELOCATIONS IN WAKE OF TIANJIN DISASTER

Less than three weeks after the massive explosion of a hazardous chemicals warehouse in Tianjin, China, another blast killed five people at a chemical plant in China‰??s coastal province of Shandong. The accident occurred as Chinese authorities were considering new industrial safety measures.
At a cabinet meeting in Beijing to draft a new water pollution prevention law, China‰??s minister of industry and information technology, Miao Wei, said that since the Tianjin explosion local governments throughout the country have provided his ministry with plans to relocate about 1,000 chemical plants away from population centers.
According to the official People‰??s Daily newspaper, the relocation proposals involve plants that are either hazardous or heavily polluting. The project, if it goes forward, would cost a total of about $63 billion. Miao did not provide details on who would pay for the moves.
Punctuating Miao‰??s announcement, five people were killed on Aug. 31 when a plant operated by Shandong Binyuan Chemical blew up in Dongying in the coastal province of Shandong. The company produces a hydrogenated adhesive as well as guar gum derivatives and clay anti-swelling agents. The official Dongying newspaper reports that local authorities are questioning company managers.

NORTH CANTON, Ohio (AP) ‰?? Four people were hurt when chlorine was mistakenly mixed with fluoride and emitted poisonous fumes at a northeast Ohio water treatment, fire officials said Tuesday.
No chemicals spilled in Monday's accident at the North Canton Water Treatment Plant but the mixture caused dangerous fumes to escape the 500-gallon tank of fluoride, said Jackson Township Fire Chief Tracy Hogue.
Three of the people who were treated at hospitals were released Monday evening, Hogue said. He didn't have information on the fourth person. The threat was contained to one room at the plant and posed no danger to the city's water supply, officials said.
Hogue said a truck driver mistakenly pumped chlorine instead of fluoride into the tank. The plant was evacuated and the truck driver and three plant employees were taken to hospitals.

HAZMAT SITUATION RESOLVED AT KINGSLAND, GA. TRUCK STOP

KINGSLAND, Ga. ‰?? Crews from as far away as Naval Air Station Jacksonville responded to a hazmat situation at a truck stop in Kingsland, Georgia Wednesday night, officials told First Coast News.
Officials said calcium carbide residue, stored inside barrels on a flatbed truck, created fumes that were initially thought to be the result of a chemical leak. The situation shut down Petro Kingsland, a truck stop located in the 1100 block of East King Avenue off Interstate 95 South Exit 3.
Authorities did not order any evacuations connected to the exposure, but said they were concerned because the chemical is considered highly volatile, the mayor told First Coast News. Hazardous materials teams responded to the scene with nearly a dozen crews. Authorities said the fumes were created when rain reacted with calcium carbide residue on the truck.
Hull's Environmental Services, based out of Jacksonville, cleaned up the scene around midnight Thursday. Employees with Hull's told First Coast News they assessed the truck and truck bed and deemed everything was being transported properly.

CHEMICAL SPILL REPORTED AT CCBC CATONSVILLE CAMPUS

CATONSVILLE, Md. ‰??Crews responded to a chemical spill at a Community College of Baltimore County campus, fire officials said.
Baltimore County fire officials said crews were dispatched at 3:11 p.m. Wednesday to 800 S. Rolling Road at CCBC's Catonsville campus after an unknown amount of mercury spilled at the Math and Science Hall building.
There were no reports of injuries, danger, quarantine or evacuations.
