BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) ‰?? A man suffered chemical burns and other injuries in the explosion of a methamphetamine lab at an apartment attached to a Bozeman motel.
Police Capt. Jim Veltkamp says the victim called 911 at about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday to report the explosion. Officers say the man had injuries to his torso and arms and chemical burns on his face. Veltkamp says the man was taken to a hospital outside of Bozeman for treatment of his injuries, which he did not believe were life-threatening.
The meth lab team from the Missouri River Drug Task Force responded and processed what remained of the lab.

WACO, Texas (AP) - Police say about 10 workers at a Central Texas recycling plant have been transported to hospitals, as a precaution, following a chemical fire.

Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton says the public was not at risk in Thursday morning's fire and the workers were being examined.

He says CMC Recycling of Waco has been evacuated and the air quality outside the immediate area was safe.

Swanton says a work crew reported a fire inside a steel tank being cut into scrap. Swanton says the tank once held hydrogen cyanide.

Hazardous materials experts were called to the scene. Swanton says the small amount of fumes safely dissipated.

PARSIPPANY ‰?? A machine fire resulted in a chemical reaction at a metal technology plant early Thursday morning, prompting an evacuation, Parsippany police said.

At about 12:19 a.m. Thursday, police responded to a report of a fire at Zimmer Trabecular Metal Technology on Pomeroy Road.

Upon arrival, police were met by the plant supervisor and security guard, who confirmed all employees were evacuated prior to police arriving on scene.

Five Parsippany fire companies responded along with Parsippany EMS. Firefighters located and extinguished the fire in the rear of the building, police said.

An investigation revealed the fire was caused by a malfunctioning motor and during the incident, a chemical reaction in the plant caused an elevated chlorine level, police said.

The Morris County Office of Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Services, Morris County Hazardous Materials Team and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection were called to the scene due to the chlorine level.

CHEMICAL SAFETY BOARD VOTES FOR URGENT INTERNAL REFORMS
Tags: public, follow-up, environmental

The U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) today took urgent action to improve the agency‰??s public transparency and accountability and ability to help prevent chemical disasters. CSB‰??s action directly responds to calls for reform from the Inspector General, four Congressional Committees, and industry and labor stakeholders and aligns with President Obama‰??s initiatives for open government.

SELAH ‰?? Thirty-seven workers at a fruit packaging plant were sent to a local hospital Tuesday after having trouble breathing, but emergency workers could find no traces of hazardous chemicals in the building.

No serious injuries were reported and no employees were admitted to the hospital.

About 100 employees were packing cherries at Monson Fruit Co. at the time, but some were returning from a break when the building was evacuated about 9:30 a.m., said Zenaida Martinez, the company‰??s human resources director.

Martinez said chlorine is used in the building, at 252 N. Rushmore Road, but noted that no leak was detected. Chlorine is used in the cherry-packing process to disinfect fruit of fungal spores, according to a Washington State University website.

An employee leaving the plant Tuesday morning said there had been an ammonia leak. But Martinez said there was no ammonia in the building where cherries were being packed. Ammonia is commonly used as an industrial refrigerant in large warehouses.

MIDDLE RIVER, Md. - Four people were taken to the hospital Wednesday after a chemical spill in Middle River.

Baltimore County fire officials said crews responded around 3:50 p.m. to Middle River Aircraft Systems, located at the 100 block of Chesapeake Park Plaza, for a reported hazmat situation. It was unclear what type of chemical was spilled.

However, the four people were taken to the hospital due to inhaling fumes from the chemical.

About 50 gallons of a mixture of calcium chloride, diesel fuel and oil spilled at the scene of a tanker crash in Clare County on Tuesday afternoon, the Clare County Sheriff‰??s Office reports.

The crash occurred about 1 p.m. at Garfield Avenue north of Ludington in Garfield Township when the driver of a tanker lost control and it rolled onto its side into a ditch. The driver, Paul Lutterloh, 20, of Trufant, suffered minor injuries and refused treatment.

The tanker, owned by Michigan Chloride, was hauling 3,000 gallons of calcium chloride.

The spill, which caused no harm to the public, was contained. Garfield Avenue was down to one lane during the clean up.

TRAFFIC CRASH LEADS TO CHEMICAL SPILL IN MADISON
Tags: us_WI, transportation, release, response, acids

MADISON, Wis:--The Madison Fire Department says a traffic crash led to a chlorine spill on Sherman Ave. Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities say Engine 10 responded to the scene of a two-vehicle crash involving a sedan and a pool chemical truck at 12:58 p.m on the corner of Sherman Ave. and Northport Dr.

Due to the appearance of spilled chemicals underneath the truck, fire crews performed rapid extrication to get the truck driver to a safe place.

Firefighters determined the impact of the crash caused a lid to fly off the chlorine tank.

Engine 10's crew hosed down the area to dilute the chlorine.

The chemical truck also had two other tanks on board contacting sulfuric and muriatic acids. Those lids remained intact and no chemicals mixed as a result of impact.

11 PEOPLE DECONTAMINATED AFTER HAZMAT INCIDENT ON UK'S CAMPUS

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The fire department had to decontaminate 11 people after a hazmat incident Wednesday inside the animal pathology building on the University of Kentucky's campus.

Joe Best, Lexington Fire Department spokesman, said the 11 people who were inside the building during the spill complained about their eyes burning and they had nausea. As a precaution, Best said, they will be taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

It's not clear what chemical they were exposed to. Best said they would be able to determine that after firefighters go inside.

"Once we get the patients taken care of -- of course, that's the top priority -- we will be making entry in short order," he said shortly after noon. "I would expect we'll know something probably in the next 45 minutes to an hour."

University officials say the situation in the animal pathology building, 1081 Veterans Drive, stemmed from a refrigerator that was recently moved from one building into another.

They say a movers took the refrigerator from the Gluck Equine Research Center to the animal pathology building Tuesday night. When workers arrived Wednesday morning, they noticed a stench. A university spokesperson said the workers followed the smell to the refrigerator, opened it and were immediately overpowered. They pulled an alarm and left.

Everyone evacuated the building and a hazardous materials crew was waiting on special gear to arrive Wednesday afternoon so they could enter the building. A UK spokesperson said Wednesday afternoon that the refrigerator was empty. They believe the odor was from something that had previously been in the refrigerator.

ABOUT 5,000 PEOPLE PROTEST RUMORED CHEMICAL PLANT IN CHINA
Tags: China, industrial, discovery, environmental

SHANGHAI ‰?? At least 5,000 residents of a Shanghai suburb protested Wednesday over a report that a petrochemical plant may be moved to their neighborhood, although authorities dismissed the report as untrue.

The protest reflected growing public concern about the environmental impact of projects such as petrochemical plants, as well as the public's deep distrust of local governments.

Over the past several years, residents of many Chinese cities have taken to the streets to oppose environmentally hazardous projects, a method they believe to be the most effective in influencing local officials who often shut the public out of decision-making.

Under police watch, thousands of demonstrators gathered Wednesday evening outside the local government compound in Jinshan district, holding up banners and chanting slogans against the possible relocation of a paraxylene plant to a planned chemical zone in Jinshan. Paraxylene is a hazardous chemical used to produce fibers and plastics.
