You may also put an egg in a petri dish, add 6M NH4OH. You can observe the
breakdown of the gelatinous egg white. Becomes quite watery. Of course, one has
to be careful of the ammonium hydroxide vapor. Good demo to illustrate effect of
bases on the eye.

I
know this is more of a K-12 education context, but Flinn Scientific
(www.flinnsci.com)
has a series of videos around goggle safety. One of them uses a whipped
cream pie in the face demonstration to illustrate protection by goggles.
Another demo they show involves adding 6 M HCl to a bowl containing a raw
egg. The egg denatures (to illustrate the effect of not wearing
goggles). This fall, I intend to use this demonstration to my science
teachers, then follow it with an egg in a bowl that is covered by goggles to
show what goggles prevent.

[New post] Lesson learned video: Acid burn
Many
years ago I saw a video on eye protection that clearly demonstrated the
protective ability of various types of goggles, glasses, face shields etc by
splattering mannequin heads with paint balloons (or some such thing). It
demonstrated the effectiveness of each type of eye
protection.
Anyway,
has anybody seen that video or similar video and if so, where can it be
found? I thought about producing my own, but thought "why re-invent the
wheel".

I
just learned about two new videos from the
University of California, San Diego (again!).
The first is a great lesson learned video from a
researcher who was burned when trifluoroacetic
acid ran down her arm:
The
second is more of a PSA-style video about eye
protection:
I've
added them to my videos
list. As always, let me know if
there's a good video out there that I should
include!
