Subject: [DCHAS-L] Hood inspections
I have been asked to post the following questions for the group to respond. Please send the response to me privately and I will compile the answers and post.
1) Are fume hoods being tested at your institution using face velocity or another method?
Yes Face velocity and smoke removal
2) Have you set a limit on the sash height (12 or 18 inches) or other height? Yes at12 and 18
2a) If so, are you conducting the face velocity at that height? Yes and yes
2b) Are you testing the hood at full open as well? Yes face velocity only not smoke
3) If you are using face velocity, has an "acceptable range" been established? If so:
3a) What is that range?
With the sash at 18" 80ft/min minimum
With the sash at 12" 100ft/min minimum
After 120 ft/min we start looking at turbulence
3b) What is the procedure if the face velocity is outside of that range?
at 150 ft/min there is too much turbulence and the hood is taken offline until it can be repaired, except for any vapor/gas exposure protection and is only used for longer running experiments such as distillations/refluxes that need space and possible impact shielding but are not considered an exposure hazard.
if the face velocity is below 80 the hood goes offline until repaired, except for any vapor/gas exposure protection and is only used for longer running experiments such as distillations/refluxes that need space and possible impact shielding but are not considered an exposure hazard.
Thanks in advance for your assistance,
Lisa
