Hundreds of dead fish were washed ashore off the coasts of Ucheli, Navapur, Dandi and other areas adjoining the Tarapur MIDC chemical zone on Sunday. Fishermen have blamed those in charge of the chemical units for directly discharging untreated effluents into the Arabian Sea.

Ramesh Bhutkade, a fisherman from Ucheli in Tarapur said the fishermen had taken their boats out to sea on Saturday, expecting a good catch. "However, we managed to catch a number of already dead fish. They had a reddish tinge and emitted a foul odour. When we returned home, we saw that many fish had been washed ashore," he said.

Another fisherman, Rajen Mehar, alleged that the authorities managing the Tarapur MIDC were discharging untreated chemical effluents directly into the sea. "MIDC had constructed a 25 million litres per day (MLD) common effluent treatment plant to treat the effluents before releasing them into the Navapur creek that directly flows into the Arabian Sea. But the factories in the Tarapur chemical zone generate 65 MLD every day, which makes it impossible for the effluents to be treated. As a result, the owners release 35-40 MLD of effluents directly into the Arabian Sea," claimed Mehar. The MIDC had sanctions to construct another treatment plant at Salwad village, but had to stall it after residents protested. They are now working towards constructing another treatment plant with a capacity of 35 MLD, which will be completed only by 2016.

ANDERSON, Ind. (May 10, 2014) ? Anderson fire crews had a busy Saturday morning after a fire broke out at Advanced Magnesium Alloys Corporation (AMACOR).

The fire was discovered by an employee just after 8AM. It was located in a pit on site.

Since factory employees are trained in fire emergencies, they initially fought the fire with salt.

HazMat crews were called to the scene to test air samples, which tested at safe levels.

DANGEROUS SPILLS ON HIGHWAYS

BINGHAMTON ? Unnoticed until something goes wrong, dangerous chemicals course steadily through the state's highways and down its secondary roads.

Shipments of ammonia, sodium hydroxide and gasoline pass through neighborhoods, around lakes, and across streams and rivers.

In 34 states, there are comprehensive rules that tell haulers where those chemicals can and cannot travel.

But in the 57 counties outside of New York City, no rules are in place to guard the state's population centers and waterways from hazardous materials carried on the roads. State lawmakers have fought to fix the regulatory blind spot for years, but to no avail.

While the nation's attention has turned to rail shipments of crude oil and other chemicals, a review of data for this report shows a higher probability of danger on the roads rather than the rails.

HAZMAT CREWS TESTING AIR QUALITY AS CREWS BATTLE NORTHWEST EDMONTON INDUSTRIAL BLAZE

EDMONTON ? Hazmat crews have been called in to test the air quality as firefighters battle a blaze at a northwest Edmonton industrial site.

Fire crews were called to Supreme Plating, an electroplating shop in the area of 127 Ave. and 127 St., around 1:15 p.m. Saturday.

Heavy, dark grey smoke was billowing from the roof of the building when fire crews arrived. Shortly after, a second alarm was called.

Because of the chemicals inside the building, there were some small explosions.

?There?s some liquid nickel and copper in there to be aware of,? said Deputy Chief Barry Lamb, with Edmonton Fire Rescue. ?So we backed out and we?ve got an exterior attack going right now.?

Hazmat crews have been called in to test the air quality, and Lamb is asking nearby residents to stay inside for the time being.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Restaurants and storefronts are buzzing again in West Virginia's capital city, but many still can't recoup money lost while they shut down after a January chemical spill.

Businesses have sued companies tied to the spill, tried to collect insurance claims or sought government loans. But some say the options available leave little confidence they can recover what they've lost.

The Jan. 9 spill in Charleston left 300,000 people without safe drinking water for days. Businesses that depend on clean water, from eateries to salons, were temporarily ordered to close.

More than 60 lawsuits target companies involved. But Freedom Industries, the company at the center of the spill, froze its lawsuits by filing for bankruptcy. Freedom's financial resources are dwindling.

No state or federal disaster loan program has awarded money.

ANAHEIM ? About 30 employees at a beverage manufacturing plant were evacuated Friday night because of a chlorine gas discharge, police said.
Anaheim police Lt. Bob Dunn said authorities were called to Nor-Cal Beverage at 1226 North Olive St. about 7:10 p.m. after reports of smoke.
Dunn said firefighters responded and found the smoke was a chlorine vapor that had escaped from a holding tank while chemicals were being delivered to the plant.
No injuries were reported.
An Anaheim Fire and Rescue hazardous materials crew arrived at the scene and checked the integrity of the holding tank and air quality, Dunn said.

CALDWELL -- Fire crews have extinguished a two-alarm blaze that broke out at a Caldwell bathroom remodeling business early Friday morning.
The fire started after an employee at Gem State Marble, located at 105 North 5th Avenue, came in early to work. The employee was mixing chemicals when a reaction sparked the blaze.
Canyon County dispatchers say the fire was reported just after 6 a.m. Firefighters requested backup from Ada County's fire departments about five minutes later.
