Before we get too deep into the holiday season, I wanted to let the list know that I will be organizing two symposia for the SF ACS national meeting in August (the 10th-14th). The reason I'm letting you know now is that the abstracts open in early January (the 13th) and close in March (the 10th), before the spring meeting in Dallas. So it would be a good time to think about whether you can contribute to either of these symposia:

"How Far We've Come": a retrospective of laboratory safety over the decades

Abstract: In the bad old days before EPA and OSHA, research laboratories were very different places than they are now. Researchers felt they had to sacrifice their health and well-being on the altar of discovery research. How far we?ve come over the past 50 years or so! This symposium will focus on how good toxicological research, advances in engineering controls and building design, and the creation of regulatory agencies have contributed to a radical shift in how we work with and interact with chemicals in the research laboratory. War stories will be shared and an acknowledgement of those who gave all to science will be included.

"Greening Our Laboratories: Why and How?"

Laboratory spaces use significantly more energy than other types of spaces. In order to maintain the financial and environmental sustainability of laboratory work, many institutions are looking at opportunities for reducing energy use in laboratories while maintaining a safe work environment. This symposium will address this issue from a variety of perspectives.
