Smoke from boiling iodine that was spilled at an Emerson manufacturing lab set off the facility's fire alarm on Oct. 30, prompting three emergency service departments to the scene.

According to Emerson Police Sgt. Scott O'Connor, upon arrival at the lab on Ackerman Avenue, members of the Bergen County Hazardous Materials Response Team noted that the chemical spill was nonhazardous, opened the windows and turned on fans to clear the air.

"They came in and they made sure it was safe..." O'Connor explained. Within minutes the building was evacuated. Fuchs EMS and Medical Transportation Services arrived at the facility. Officers from the Emerson Police Department sealed off the street between Hasbrouck Avenue and Kinderkamack Road for approximately an hour.

"Whether it's a serious situation or an everyday situation, it's got to be handled in the same way," explained O'Connor.

Several employees with the DuPont Fayetteville Works site were sent to the hospital after a chemical leak Thursday, a company spokeswoman said.

Lisa Randall said one employee was found unconscious in the manufacturing area of the plant off N.C. 87 in Cumberland County near Bladen County.

The employee, an operator, was found around 3:30 p.m. Randall said.

The unidentified employee was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and later transferred to an unknown hospital in Chapel Hill, Randall said.

Randall said there was a leak of methylene chloride. The leak was contained to the building and did not affect the neighboring community, she said.

Methylene chloride is a colorless liquid with a chloroform-like odor, according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration. It is often used for paint stripping, degreasing and multiple industrial manufacturing work, according to OSHA's website.

Randall said the chemical was being used at DuPont as a coolant.

"At this time it is unclear what caused the employee to become unconscious," she said.

Teachers and students of Ogba Junior Grammar School in Lagos, were, on Thursday afternoon, hospitalised after reportedly inhaling suspected toxic chemical.
Four people, who are workers at a nearby laboratory have been arrested in connection with the incident .
About 22 of the pupils and two teachers who were affected by the chemical were rushed to a nearby specialist hospital.
The Nigerian Tribune gathered that though the immediate cause of the incident was yet to be ascertained, there were concerns over suspected expired chemicals used by a laboratory in the area.
An eye witness, Idris , told the Nigerian Tribune that people tried to force their way into Ogba Shopping Arcade, where the laboratory was situated, but were prevented by policemen from Area G Police command.
The image maker in charge of the state police, command, Ngozi Braide, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, said that four of the students were, as at Thursday evening, still being treated at the hospital.
The director of the Lagos State Fire and Emergency Service, Razaq Fadipe, also confirmed the incident to the Nigerian Tribune and linked it to the chemical laboratory at the shopping complex.
The Lagos Fire Service boss said, ?On getting to the school, 22 students were unconscious. LASAMBUS was able to revive most of them and their parents took them home.
?Four were unwell and were taken to Blue Cross Hospital. We were able to trace the odour to the complex which shares a fence with the school.
?We spotted the laboratory where the smell was coming from and the place has been cordoned off. Investigation is still on.?
He said that the affected students became weak with some of them falling down before an alarm was raised by teachers and students in the school.
The incident , which reportedly happened around noon, when the students were on break causedconfusion in the whole of Ogba.
She also confirmed that four people had been arrested and would be transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department PAnti, Yaba for onward investigation.

ROCKMART, Ga. -
Polk County fire crews say there was a steam explosion at a Rockmart chemical plant on Thursday morning, and one woman was killed.

They say it happened around 8:15 a.m. at the Meggitt Polymers and Composites on Goodyear Street in Rockmart.

The Polk Co. coroner confirms that 56-year-old Elaine Davidson of Rockmart was killed in the accident. Her body has been sent to the GBI so that they can confirm her cause of death.

Authorities tell FOX 5's Doug Evans the explosion happened in an isolated area, and the plant is now back up and running. It was not a chemical explosion of any sort, but instead a steam explosion. OSHA was also

CHEMICAL SPILL TEMPORARILY CLOSES RESEARCH FACILITY ON CAMPUS

The Science and Engineering Research Facility building closed because of a chemical spill Tuesday when boron tricholoride, a colorless gas, leaked out on the first floor.

UT Police emailed a notice to students alerting them of the spill at 4:44 p.m., indicating the building had been evacuated and closed following standard protocol for a chemical spill.

?Students were present, but no one was hurt,? said Whitney Heins, media and internal relations coordinator for the Office of Communications and Marketing.

Fifty people were evacuated from the building and four students were in close proximity to the incident. The research team was transferring the compressed gas from a 20-pound heavy-walled metal cylinder into a one and a half diameter glass cylinder.

?When the team heated the gas, the glass cyclinder shattered and leaked the chemical,? said D.J. Corcoran, captain of the Knoxville Fire Department.

Because boron tricholoride poses respiratory threats, the four students near the accident were taken to UT hospital but later released.

EXPLOSION AT CHEMICAL PLANT IN GRANBY

An explosion occurred late Wednesday at Aldex Chemical, a chemical-product factory in Granby, about 80 kilometres east of Montreal.

Firefighters got a call at around 5 p.m. about a blast at the factory on Laurent Street.

Local media reported the presence of thick smoke that could be seen from kilometres away.

No one was injured in the explosion.

Nearby buildings were evacuated, as 3,600 kg of polystyrene burned in the fire.

Aldex Chemical employs 18 people, and has been operating for 34 years.

It specializes in the manufacturing of resins and synthetic rubber that is used in waste-water treatment plants.

The plant has three types of dangerous materials: sulfuric acid, ammonia and styrene.

Just around lunch time, a science experiment went horribly awry at Edward Milne community school. A chemical smell, that emanated from the science wing, quickly spread throughout the halls, prompting an evacuation of the building.

?Everyone is fine,? said principal Patrick Swinburnson, standing in the midst of students in the sports field behind the building, a half hour after the evacuation.

?We had a science experiment that got carried away.?

EMCS student Alex Thurlborn posted on the Sooke News Mirror Facebook page stating, ?it was fumes from a chemical experiment, that the chemistry 11 class that I happen to be in was doing an experiment bromine and aluminum foil. The fumes somehow got into the air ventilation I suppose and went through the school.?

The emergency evacuation was a good test of their procedures. Teachers exited the building with class lists in hand, and students used cell phones to notify their parents. According to Swinburnson, 70 per cent of the students were released within the first hour of the evacuation, and the remaining students ? including those from Port Renfrew ? went to Journey middle school.
