YONKERS - Four DPW workers had to be evacuated from a water treatment facility on Wainwright Avenue in Yonkers after a 150-pound chlorine tank was found to be leaking.
The fire department and hazmat team responded to the scene around 9:30 a.m. and closed off sections of Tuckahoe Road for a short time. Montessori School 31 at 7 Ravenswood Road was also placed on lockdown as a safety precaution.

? Three people were treated at a Pahrump Hospital this morning after a chemical spill at an outpatient care facility.
The Pahrump Valley Times reports that at least three people were treated for respiratory symptoms at Desert View Hospital after an unknown quantity of the chemical phenyl was spilled shortly before 9:30 a.m. The newspaper said it believed all three were staffers at Health Care Partners.
It was unknown how the spill occurred, but it did prompt an evacuation of the Health Care Partners facility on East Calvada Boulevard.

Okla. (WLNS) - A rural Oklahoma town received a major shock late Wednesday night when a chemical plant exploded. A witness at the scene was able to capture one of the explosions. The explosion sent a fireball over 80 feet into the air and forced officials to evacuate homes up to four miles north of the facility.

One person was severely burned and dozens more were evacuated when an explosive chemical mix sparked a fire in a warehouse district on Monday, Hollywood Fire Rescue officials said.
A small explosion and fire was reported around 2 p.m. in Synergy Labs at 3201 SW 42nd Street, Battalion Chief John Kuklinski said.
"Crews had the fire put out but there were some kind of hazardous chemicals," he said. "The company mixes these chemicals together for hair conditioner [but] by themselves they are toxic so we had to figure out what we had."
An employee suffered second-degree burns and was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital but it was unclear whether flames or chemicals caused his injuries.

Four workers at the Formosa Plastics Corp facility in Point Comfort were airlifted to area hospitals and fifth taken by ambulance Friday after what authorities are calling a "flash fire".
According to a press release from the plant, the accident happened while five employees were performing maintenance on an out-of-service tower in one of the plant units.

OIL, FRACKING CHEMICAL LEAKS WORSEN COLORADO FLOOD DISASTER

There are at least eight confirmed dead from the disastrous flooding that began in Colorado on September 9, with hundreds still missing. Now, pollutants from damaged fracking and oil infrastructure are getting into the floodwaters, exacerbating the already dire situation.
Spread across 17 counties and leaving 15,000 decimated homes in its wake, the flooding is the result of heavy rain that occurred when a slow-moving cold front clashed with hot air from the south over the state. The flooding hit areas ranging from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins and caused the evacuation of 11,750 people. Some of those evacuees are reportedly returning home now, only to find their houses destroyed, and in some instances, likely discovering foul polluted water.
Mike Turner, a resident of the town of Greeley, ignored evacuation orders and remained on his property with his family, watching as the waters engulfed and damaged an oil tank and well on his property. As a result, "there is some crude in the water," he said. "Not a huge amount." But just northeast of the area, oil drums and crude were spotted in the water, their origins not yet known.
And Roy Rudisill, director of Weld County Office of Emergency Management, said there was at least one oil pipeline that burst under pressure from the flooding, though he did not clarify which, or how much oil was leaking from it.

PHOENIX ? Emergency crews have evacuated a Phoenix recycling facility after nearly 20 people got sick there Tuesday morning.
Emergency responders set up a triage area in the parking lot of the Phoenix North Transfer Station and Materials Recovery Facility near Dixileta Drive and 27th Avenue, just east of Interstate 17. More than 20 emergency units were called to the scene.
According to Larry Nu–ez of the Phoenix Fire Department, there was an unknown chemical spill. Hazardous-materials crews ware on the scene and are trying to determine exactly what is leaking.
Nu–ez told 3TV that they were dealing with an airborne hazard.
Capt. Troy Caskey of the Phoenix Fire Department said 19 people were treated on the scene. Their symptoms include scratchy throats, burning noses and vomiting.
"It came in to us as an 'unknown odor,'" Caskey told 3TV's Ryan O'Donnell. "We're not sure exactly what it was or if it's even related to what's been going on with these people ...."
Workers were evacuated after a reported chemical spill and then allowed back inside after the facility was deemed safe. After four workers became ill, employees were evacuated a second time.

The Ministry of Labour and University of Windsor are both investigating after a 200-litre cauldron of liquid nitrogen - a hazardous material - was transported along Wyandotte Street West by three students.
Candy Donaldson, the university's hazardous materials technician, and a member of CUPE Local 1393 which is currently on strike, received a call from pickets outside the Centre for Engineering Innovation in the early afternoon Friday.
"They knew something was wrong," said Donaldson, who was told that three engineering students had emerged from the building with a hazardous materials tank on wheels and were wheeling it down the street, overseen by engineering department head Andrzej Sobiesiak.
"You didn't have to be a scientist to know something was weird."
Donaldson rushed to the scene in time to see the tank being wheeled along Wyandotte to the university's main liquid nitrogen filling tank at Essex Hall.
WIN00768540_1_1She watched as they filled up the tank, and then turned around and headed back to the CEI, about two blocks and two intersections to the east. They also crossed against a red light, Donaldson said.
"I approached the department head and said 'Do you realize what you're doing is illegal?,'" said Donaldson, who called and notified the ministries of labour, environment and transportation.
"And he said (head of health and safety) Leigh Harold said it was OK, and we said OK, and they continued to drag it down Wyandotte."
The transportation of liquid nitrogen is regulated under many federal and provincial acts, and requires that it be moved in large quantities by a vehicle with hazardous goods markings, or "placarding."

A chemical reaction involving sulfur dioxide and a subsequent fire at a shuttered industrial building forced hundreds of city residents from their northeast-side homes Monday evening.

Firefighters evacuated residents living between 22nd Street NE and Fourth Street NE and between Grace and Rowland avenues Monday evening after responding to the former Convoy Containers plant at 1811 20th St. NE for complaints of a foul odor.

CHEMICAL REACTION
Firefighters were called the former cardboard- and plastic-container manufacturer shortly after 2 p.m. Monday. When they entered the building, they discovered a chemical reaction that produced intense, white smoke inside a large vat, said Canton Battalion Chief Thomas Garra, who also serves as the Stark County HAZMAT team leader.
The HAZMAT team found conditions created by the single-story factory unsafe for neighbors. As winds carried the stench of sulfur, emergency officials widened the evacuation area to the southern city limits. Decontamination stations were setup for firefighters outside of the old factory and a command station was established at the Stark County Sheriff?s Office to coordinate emergency response efforts.
