TAMPA (FOX 13) -
It was the million-dollar question on everybody's mind in Tampa after their morning commute: What in the world was that smell?
"It had the smell of a natural gas, or a propane gas-type release," said Tampa Fire Rescue Chief Tom Forward.
The "gas-like" smell was such an issue that emergency personnel in Tampa were forced into action.
"911 dispatch center received an alarm of an odor in the downtown area," said Forward.
An investigation turned up a few hunches, but no concrete answer. To get that, you had to head to strawberry country.
"We have a new chemical that many of the farms are using in larger quantity for the first time called Paladin," said Florida Strawberry Growers Executive Director Ted Campbell.
Paladin is used to fumigate the soil before any berries are planted, killing anything that would put the crop in jeopardy.
"It's organic, safe, used as a food additive, all the good stuff is there. But it has the smell of onion, garlic what you smell with propane or natural gas," said Campbell.
The chemical has been used for a couple of weeks now.
The smell found its way to Tampa thanks to a Florida summer tradition -- rain.

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service says fumes from a ruptured gas cylinder caused this morning's chemical emergency on Brisbane's northside.
Authorities say the chemical agent - used to odorize gas - leaked from a depot in Banyo and drifted across Banyo, Sandgate and Bracken Ridge.
Six students were taken to Prince Charles Hospital and about 60 students and several teachers from Earnshaw State College and Sandgate District State High were treated for nausea and vomiting after the gas leak forced the evacuation of properties on Brisbane's northside.
The emergency was over by lunchtime and school resumed for the afternoon.

AMMONIA LEAK AT LACY-LAKEVIEW FERTILIZER PLANT CAUSES SMALL SCARE

LACY-LAKEVIEW, TX ? An ammonia leak at a Lacy-Lakeview fertilizer plant had local firefighters and a hazmat crew on alert Wednesday morning.
A tank containing anhydrous ammonia was brought to the Equalizer fertilizer plant and had a valve that was not fully closed.
Workers at a nearby business smelled ammonia around 5:30 a.m.
Lacy-Lakeview volunteer firefighters arrived to assist workers in closing the leak.
The terms 'ammonia' and 'leak' and 'fertilizer' bring images of the fatal West explosion in April to mind, but the leak, according to both the fire department and the fertilizer plant, was minimal.
?It?s a completely different kind of fertilizer," explained Lacy-Lakeview Fire Chief Patricia Byars-Faulkner. "This is not the bad kind. We?ve done inspections there. We?ve done walkthroughs with the different fire departments in the area who give us mutual aid. They don?t store anything there. When it comes in, they mix it, and out it goes. This really wasn?t a threat.?

A leaking tank caused a temporary evacuation of the McDonald?s at 663 Washington Ave. in Belleville on Saturday afternoon.
An electronic alert reported an explosion at 1:42 p.m. However, according to Battalion Chief John Olivieri of the Belleville Fire Department, there was no explosion, but a CO2 tank did rupture.
The building was evacuated, and Nutley Haz-Mat was also summoned to the scene, along with the Belleville Health Department.
About 20 people in all were believed evacuated. A tank that was leaking carbon dioxide was discovered.
"It displaced the oxygen in the building, and it had to be evacuated," Olivieri said on Tuesday.
The leak caused liquid to blow out, but there were no injuries reported.

OXFORD ? A Belvidere man said his SUV is ruined after driving behind a truck leaking a toxic chemical yesterday on Route 31 north in Oxford Township.
Zbigniew Cichy was driving his blue Lexus GX 470 from Washington through Oxford behind the truck when his car was sprayed with zirconium acetate, a toxic and corrosive chemical.
"Before we approached the hill it began spraying me," he said. "At first I thought it was water, and turned on the windshield wipers. It couldn't remove the stuff so I turned it to the high speed and it still didn't help."
Cichy then tried to alert the driver to the spill by flashing his lights and honking his horn. A few miles later the driver pulled over and told Cichy to call the local Hazardous Materials Team.
"The guy said it was acid, corrosive acid, and by the time he stopped it was completely pouring out of truck," he said.

Three people had to be decontaminated after a 500-litre chemical acid spill at the factory at about 6am.
Around 40 firefighters from five fire stations, and a decontamination unit with specialist officers, some wearing gas-tight suits, spent much of the morning tackling the incident.
Initially 12 casualties were reported following the spillage of paraesthetic vinegar-based organic acid, with four people decontaminated and then treated by paramedics. One was taken to hospital for further treatment.
According to reports, injuries ranged from breathing difficulties to minor chemical burns. It is believed that the clear solution was being stored near a waste processing area when another chemical spilled into it, producing enough of a reaction for it to boil over, causing a spillage around the unit.

On August 29, 2013 at about 11:55 A.M., the Fillmore Fire Department and the Fillmore Police Department were dispatched to a report of a spill of Hydrochloric Acid in the 500 Block of First St.
The incident unfolded when a private company was delivering the chemical to the city swimming pool. The pallet jack used by the company employee to transport the chemical from the delivery truck to the swimming pool, malfunctioned. The chemical spilled on the ground. The private company was able to contain approximately 150 - 180 gallons. It's estimated that another 100 gallons flowed into the storm drain. A specialized chemical clean-up crew responded to assist with the clean-up.
Fillmore High School is located near the spill and was secured for a short period of time. No students or faculty were injured. The company worker and a City of Fillmore worker sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

A chemical plant discharged ammonia into a river in central China, killing fish along a 40 kilometer stretch and prompting the company responsible to suspend trading of its shares.
Authorities have cleared about 100,000 kilograms (110 tons) of fish from the Fuhe River in Hubei province since Sept. 2 after the spill at a factory owned by Hubei Shuanghuan Science and Technology Stock Co. (000707), the official Xinhua News Agency reported today, citing local authorities.
The Shenzhen-based company?s spill underscores the challenges that Chinese leaders face in fulfilling their promises to no longer sacrifice the environment for the sake of economic growth. Severe water pollution affects 75 percent of China?s rivers and lakes, according to Judith Shapiro, a professor at American University in Washington.
The factory was ordered to halt operations after local environmental protection department found ammonia exceeding national standards in samples from its drain outlet, Xinhua reported. Trading on the company?s shares were halted in Shenzhen.
