Nine people were hospitalized Saturday after being exposed to formaldehyde at an Elgin factory, officials said.

The Elgin Fire Department said they responded to a reported chemical spill at Capsonic Corporation, at 460 Second Street.

Facility representatives and a HAZMAT team determined an injection molding type machine overheated and instead of melting chemical pellets, it caused the pellets to burn, releasing formaldehyde gas, according to a release from the Elgin Fire Department.

The plant was ventilated, but a total of 12 workers were evaluated, nine of which were transported to area hospitals, the release said.

A chemical leak of liquid ammonia from a cold storage unit in Shanghai has killed 15 people, according to China's official news agency.

There were also 26 people injured in the leak at around 11:00 local time (03:00 GMT), Xinhua reports.

Local media published pictures of firefighters at the scene.

China's industrial safety regulations are sometimes ignored by local authorities focused on boosting economic development, observers say.

Local media say that the incident occurred in the city's northern district of Baoshan at a refrigeration unit owned by a seafood company, AFP reports.

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Firefighters responded to a Family Dollar store Sunday after chemicals were intentionally spilled and mixed together.

Capt. Barrett Baker with Tucson Fire tells KGUN9 that the hazmat team was dispatched to 707 E. Ft. Lowell Rd. at about 2:30 p.m. to monitor the air and make sure the spill was cleaned up.

"Anytime you're dealing with a hazardous materials situation, it all depends on what exactly you're dealing with. But, we don't know that until we get there. So, we're kind of flying blind for lack of a better term," Baker added.

The store was evacuated and crews determined that there was nothing dangerous in the air.

One person did complain of having a hard time breathing, but they were assessed on scene and did not have to go to the hospital.

Tucson Police also responded to the store, and determined that someone had entered, poured ammonia and bleach on the floor and then left.

WATERBURY -- A chemical spill caused the closure of East Main Street near the Cheshire town line during rush hour on Thursday.

The spill was reported at around 4:30 p.m. by a truck driver carrying a shipment of chemicals to Pennsylvania, said Fire Chief David Martin.

The truck driver noticed smoke coming out of his truck and pulled to the side of the road just, passed a shopping plaza at 3670 East Main St. The spill came from a drum filled with a hydrogen peroxide solution, part of a shipment from Hubbard-Hall Inc. on Leonard Street, Martin said.

Workers from Environmental Services Inc. a Hubbard-Hall contractor, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and city firefighters worked on containing a small leak from the truck and a leak inside the tractor-trailer, Martin said.

A gallon of hydrochloric acid spilled in an Ann Arbor barn Thursday evening, causing the Washtenaw County Hazardous Materials crew to spend about four hours cleaning up.

Ann Arbor Fire Department officials said firefighters were sent at 4:38 p.m. Thursday to a barn behind a home in the 2900 block of Kimberly Street. Officials said someone on a cleanup crew working in the barn dropped a glass jar with an unknown liquid on the second floor of the barn.

After a short time, the crew saw smoke coming from the spill, got out of the building and called the fire department. Ann Arbor firefighters arrived and then called a second AAFD unit with extra hazmat training.

That crew determined they needed to call the Washtenaw County HazMat Team. The team entered the building and determined about a gallon of hydrochloric acid had spilled onto debris in the barn.

A hazmat team was called to New Auburn High School on Friday morning for a spill of three gallons of formaldehyde, a flammable and corrosive liquid and gas.

The spill happened as school staff was getting ready for the start of the classes next week. The two staff members involved weren?t seriously injured, but were told to have a medical assessment done, which they did.

The West Central Wisconsin Hazardous Materials Response Team responded at 9:17 a.m., with members of the Chippewa Falls Fire and Emergency Services Hazardous Materials team and the Eau Claire Fire Department Chemical Assessment Team.

The hazmat team assessed the scene with the New Auburn fire chief, and made two entries into the school to clean up the spill. The school was ventilated and monitored for air quality. There were no signs of spill residue. WRR Environmental Services then removed the contained chemical waste.

Upwards of 200 employees were evacuated at Brown Printing in Waseca Thursday morning due to toxic fumes apparently being released. Company officials say that the fumes were generated after a very small quantity of chemicals were accidentally blended, and that there was no actual toxic spill. They say the plant followed prescribed safety procedures and evacuated the facility and the regional hazardous materials team was called in to handle the chemicals. Several roads around the facility as well as nearby businesses were also reportedly closed as a precaution. No serious injuries have been reported, and an investigation into how it happened is underway.

ORLANDO, Fla. ? A chemical spill on the University of Central Florida campus prompted evacuations Friday morning.

Authorities said hazmat crews were called when less than 2 liters of hydrochloric acid spilled in a classroom in the College of Research and Education in Optics and Lasers' Creol building.
The building was evacuated for about an hour and a half while hazmat crews cleaned the spill. It has since reopened.
