We don't have a required centralized inventory system. The University does have a subscription to Chem Tracker, which last I heard was paid from the administrations research overhead budget. We also have a University subscription to MSDS online paid for from a central budget. And, to complete the model, waste disposal, at least from active research projects, is paid for from a central budget.

You would need to confirm with your Research Accounting department, but I'm going to guess that like many expenses assumed to be covered by overhead, that a research index could not pay for what you are proposing. Of course, it could be pushed down to the Department level where a chair could have the choice of tapping individual researcher's overhead accounts or their Departmental budget (i.e. department's research overhead account, presumably).

As we begin to expand our existing bar code chemical inventory system, the folks in Administration are asking if there are any institutions that charge a fee back to departments in order to pay for the system.

Hard economic times lead to such inquiries from VP's.

I appreciate any comments regarding funding of chemical inventory systems, related staffing, and delivery vehicles, etc.
