The first major test of the Yuba-Sutter hazardous-materials response team occurred at Monday's tanker accident on Highway 70, and administrators said Tuesday it could not have gone better.
Hazmat administrators said more than 20 technicians and specialists arrived at the accident six miles north of Marysville and immediately began assessing the situation, which involved a tanker with 8,000 gallons of ethanol that had rolled on its side.
After more than 13 hours, the hazmat team Ñ with assistance from other agencies Ñ helped clean up the accident without a snag, said Scott Bryan, emergency operations manager for Yuba City.

MAN JAILED FOR CHEMICAL BOMB EXPLOSION

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) - Police say a man is in custody for allegedly setting off a chemical or bottle bomb in a residential area of Williamsburg Tuesday night.
According to Major Greg Riley with the Williamsburg Police Department, crews responded to the 400 block of Merrimac Trail just before 8 p.m. for a loud explosion and smoke.
Riley said an exploded chemical or bottle bomb was found on scene and 26-year-old Casey Shanholtz is in custody.
No one was injured and the suspect is not a resident of the area.
Shanholtz will likely be charged with manufacture, possession and use of firearm, bomb or explosive materials, according to Riley.

12 JOHNS HOPKINS AT KESWICK WORKERS SICKENED; INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-Twekve people were sickened at Johns Hopkins at Keswick on Monday afternoon. They experienced similar symptoms to last week's hazmat incident.
Hazmat crews were on the scene after 12 employees complained they were feeling ill.
Seven were taken to area hospitals. Five others refused treatment.
The employees appeared to have similar symptoms to that of 17 employees who were sickened last Tuesday at the office complex.
Those employees experienced dizziness, nausea, difficulty breathing and vomiting.
Area hospitals are being advised to report any illness fitting related criteria.
Baltimore health officials say the cause of last week's problem was a hot water heater in the south building of the complex that was the source of nitrates and nitrites.
The investigation into the cause of Monday's situation is still under investigation. The south building will be closed Tuesday to allow the investigation to continue. The north building will be open as usual.

CHEMICAL PLANT IN EAST HARRIS COUNTY UNDER CONTROL; 1 PERSON INJURED

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas - One person was injured Monday in a chemical plant fire near the City of La Porte.
The fire broke out shortly after 1 p.m. at Akzo Nobel Polymer Chemicals located north of Highway 225. There was an explosion in a unit that produces a co-catalyst used in the making of plastic, company officials said.
It sent a huge plume of black smoke into the sky. Both the cities of La Porte and Pasadena said there was no shelter-in-place issued, and there was no immediate danger to the community.
Company spokeswoman Debbie Sullivan said the situation was under control in about 45 minutes.
"Our internal emergency response team did respond to it, it was declared under control about a quarter to 2, it's still burning but we're just trying to let it burn itself out," Sullivan said. "We did have one contract maintenance employee who was injured and sent to Herman Memorial Hospital. I don't know the extent of the injuries."
There was no word on the cause of the explosion and subsequent fire. The company said it was focusing on extinguishing the fire and making sure all of its employees were safe.
The company said it has been seven years since they've had a fire at the plant.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS FOUND IN AGAWAM

AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) - A hazardous materials situation at the Agawam Police Department on Sunday left some residents confused and nervous.
According to Mike Mazza, a trooper for the state Fire Marshals Office and Eric Gillis, a Lieutenant for the Agawam Police Department, a man found a soda bottle bomb with some sort of chemical inside in front of his home just before noon on Sunday.
He put the container into his vehicle and drove it to the Police Department on Springfield Street.
Police noticed that the chemical inside the bottle was reacting inside his vehicle, so they called in the state police Regional Hazmat Team, who secured the vehicle and tested the chemical.
Trooper Mazza told 22News they have tentatively identified the chemical, but he declined to say what it may be; no one was hurt.
Trooper Mazza says if you find any suspicious containers in your town notify the police or fire department of the location instead of trying to transport it yourself.

From Chemistry World today comes news of new sanctions for research misconduct, as set out in the Research Councils UK Policy and Guidelines on Governance of Good Research Conduct. Chemistry World reports:
Universities who do not take cases of research misconduct seriously could have their funding withdrawn. É Penalties could be applied to universities or research organisations which fail to meet RCUK's obligations for research integrity - for example, if institutions conduct incomplete or biased investigations into alleged misconduct or if their researchers have committed Ôpersistent research misconduct'. Such failures could result in existing grants being revoked, applications getting rejected Ôfor any period of time, including indefinitely' or even retrospectively clawing back funding from the institution.
Breach of duty of care, whether deliberately, recklessly or by gross negligence:
- Disclosing improperly the identity of individuals or groups involved in research without their consent, or other breach of confidentiality;
- Placing any of those involved in research in danger, whether as subjects, participants or associated individuals, without their prior consent, and without appropriate safeguards even with consent; this includes reputational danger where that can be anticipated
- Not taking all reasonable care to ensure that the risks and dangers, the broad objectives and the sponsors of the research are known to participants or their legal representatives, to ensure appropriate informed consent is obtained properly, explicitly and transparently
- Not observing legal and reasonable ethical requirements or obligations of care for animal subjects, human organs or tissue used in research, or for the protection of the environment

WINOOSKI POLICE INVESTIGATE SUSPECTED METH LAB

Abenaki Way in Winooski was a popular place for all the wrong reasons Sunday morning.
"Generally this downtown area of Winooski is a peaceful and quiet place to live," said Ben Clarke, a local resident.
But Sunday the small street was filled with first responders, a hazmat truck and a bomb squad as police found what they say fit the description of a meth lab inside the bedroom of a third floor apartment at Keen's Crossing.
"The container was a ice tea plastic gallon container that you buy and it had a device on the top of it and you could see it fermenting. You could see it actually boiling and you could see it off-gassing from it," said Winooski Fire Chief David Bergeron.

HAZMAT, POLICE INVESTIGATE "SUSPICIOUS" APARTMENT FIRE

PARMA, Ohio - Police in Parma are now searching for the suspects responsible for a "cooking meth lab" that caught fire Friday.
A Police spokesperson told NewsChannel 5 Saturday, what's believed to be two suspects, fled the building and never returned after the Parma Fire Department responded to reports of black smoke coming from a 3rd floor apartment.
Eighteen firefighters responded to 5257 Knollwood Drive just before 8 p.m. Friday.
A spokesperson for the Parma Fire Department said a neighbor called for help after hearing a smoke detector alarm.
The fire was contained to the third floor apartment where it originated. No one was in the apartment at the time of the fire. Flames were quickly extinguished but investigators, including the regional Hazmat Team, were called to the scene when firefighters reported seeing suspicious materials.
