These are the answers from my laser guy here at Illinois. Our inventory showed 559 lasers on campus as of 12/31/13:

 

“Our laser ‘inventory’ system is kept in a Microsoft Access database.  It was relatively easy to create, modify and maintain.  Fields in the database are filled when a new laser is registered and updated periodically with the latest laser audit date, room changes, operational status change, etc.

 

Nearly 10 years ago we have purchased Lazan Lite from Rockwell Laser Industries for hazard analysis calculations.  It does nearly everything we need but does not include all the wavelengths and lasing media now available.”

Hi Listers!

 

I am looking into what type of laser inventory and hazard calculation systems we might utilize for our laser safety program (academic research labs at Cornell). I’m interested in finding out what systems other people are using and what their experience has been.  If you have a laser safety program and are willing to share, I have the following questions:

1)      Do you have a laser inventory system, and if yes, what type do you use?  If it is commercial, which product is it and do you have any comments on its strengths/limitations?

2)      Do you use commercial software to calculate (or use to verify hand calculations) the various applicable hazard analysis values (e.g. OD, NOHZ, NHZ, eye & skin MPE, etc. …)?  If yes, what product do you use and do you have any comments on its strengths/limitations?

Any info you can provide would be appreciated – either through the list serve or you can e-mail me directly (I’m cross-posting on a RAD list serve as well, so please accept my apologies if you get this posting twice).
