CLEVELAND, Ohio Ñ A bomb squad was called in to handle hazardous materials following an investigation into a string of burglaries on Tuesday.
The materials were found in a home near W. 83rd Street and Denison Avenue following an arrest and search warrant shortly after 6 a.m. Authorities say a hazardous material was in the home, leading to the search for additional hazardous items.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Boeing Co's new 787 Dreamliner suffered its second mishap in two days at the same airport with the same airline, extending a series of problems that have dogged the jet for more than a month and notched up concern about the plane.
A fuel leak on Tuesday forced a 787 operated by Japan Airlines to cancel takeoff at Boston's Logan International Airport. On Monday, an electrical fire erupted in a different 787 also operated by Japan Airlines at the Boston airport.
No passengers or crew were injured, but both incidents brought out firefighters, and the National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday bulked up the team investigating the fire.

WORKER INJURED: HAZMAT CALLED TO PLATING COMPANY

An employee at a Des Moines plating company was injured Tuesday morning after falling into a tank of chemicals heated to more than 300 degrees. The vat was filled with chemicals similar to Drano.
The Des Moines Fire Department says its HAZMAT team was called to 2100 NE 60th Avenue to assist with decontamination efforts at Barrett Plating, Inc. The company specializes in zinc plating.
Brian O'Keefe with the fire department says two employees had been trying to recover metal parts that had fallen to the bottom of a five-foot-deep container of super-heated chemicals when the accident happened. One the workers started to fall into the tank and the other grabbed him and pulled him off to the side, preventing full submersion in the chemicals.
"He caught him and was able to pull him to the side so only his lower extremities were exposed," says O'Keefe.
Decontamination efforts began immediately and the injured man was taken to a local hospital by private ambulance.
The company is not commenting on the incident and the names of those involved have not been released. While the condition of the worker is not known at this time, fire officials say he is being treated at the burn unit in Iowa City.

SMOKE BILLOWS FROM CANNING VALE CHEMICAL FIRE

Update: Roads in Canning Vale have been reopened and nearby residents reassured that smoke billowing from a chemical fire does not pose a threat.
Nearby residents were advised to continue to remain inside, with doors and windows closed and air conditioners switched off, however, because while the smoke was not hazardous it could cause irritation.
A warning was initially issued for people on Wednesday afternoon after a chemical fire broke out about 3.30pm at a factory at Coulson Way in Canning Vale.
While the chemicals in the resin factory were hazardous the smoke is not dangerous.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services confirmed the chemicals inside the chemical resin factory were hazardous, but emphasised the smoke itself was not dangerous.

The smoke plume impacted people in an area bounded by Yale Road, Spencer Road and Nicholson Road in the suburbs of Langford, Canning Vale and Thornlie and surrounding areas, DFES said.

A flammable liquid ignited a fire that damaged a church and sent a worker installing carpet there to the hospital Friday morning.
Brosville Volunteer Fire Department responded to Brosville United Methodist Church at 121 Long Circle and found light smoke coming from the sanctuary upon arrival, according to a news release from Brosville Assistant Chief Jay Farrar.
....Two employees from a company were installing carpet in the building at the time of the fire. They were treated for smoke inhalation and one was transported by Regional One EMS to Danville Regional Medical Center for further evaluation.
The Pittsylvania County Fire Marshal investigated and determined that a flammable liquid was ignited by an undetermined source. The blaze was accidental.

Four people were taken to the hospital Friday night suffering from smoke inhalation after a fire at the General Motors Assembly plant.
Fire Chief Travis Eastham said the plant is closed for the holiday, but maintenance workers were working inside. Those transported to the hospital were three GM employees and one outside contractor, the chief said.
He estimated the damage at $10,000.

A Maine man who suffered severe burns when the fuel tank he was cutting with a gas-powered saw on MaineGeneral Medical Center property in Manchester exploded has sued the hospital and the town.
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Edward Bishop of Oakland said in his suit filed in Kennebec County Superior Court that his work on the property last April should have been better supervised.
The 34-year-old Bishop claims negligence on the part of the town and hospital for failing to "designate hazardous materials, which required specialized handling and disposal." He is seeking unspecified damages.
The Kennebec Journal reports that Bishop suffered second and third-degree burns in the explosion. He had been hired to remove debris from the property that had once been a junkyard.

Bergen County hazmat and bomb squad crews converged on a Fair Lawn residence Monday night to ensure a suspected chemical suicide carried out in a car outside the home didn't pose a danger to neighborhood residents.
A man, who has yet to be identified, was found dead in the driver's seat of a blue Honda outside a 36th Street home around 4:30 p.m. Monday with a bucket of chemicals beside him, police said.
Due to the yellow tinge of the chemicals and the pungent rotten egg-like odor emanating from the vehicle, hazmat experts on scene suspected the man may have been overcome by highly poisonous hydrogen sulfide fumes, which can be produced by mixing together certain household items.

Two persons were killed and four others severely injured when a major fire broke out on Saturday at the Hetero Drugs Limited (HDL) in the special economic zone in N.Narsapuram village in Nakkapalli mandal in Visakhapatnam. The injured were rushed for treatment to Visakhapatnam, which is 85 km from the spot, and their condition is said to be critical.
According to information reaching here, the chemical reactor at the plant exploded at about 5.30 p.m due to reasons yet to be ascertained. Two persons - B Jayadheer Rao and K Tirupati - died on the spot. Around eight more workers, including three contract workers, received injuries. All of them were first shifted to the Anakapalle government hospital and later, four of the more critically injured were shifted to a private hospital in Visakhapatnam. These four were identified as G Venkat Rao, KV Papa Rao, Chintala Devudu and Naveen.
The HDL and the Hetero Labs Limited (HLL), which is also located in the same premises, are engaged in manufacturing medicines against HIV/AIDS.

BURNS, Ore. -- State police say all it took was a traffic stop near Burns, Ore., to find a meth lab on the move.
"Two people were arrested Saturday afternoon following a traffic stop by Hines Police Department and Harney County Sheriff's Office on Highway 20 on the west end of Burns -- after a traffic complaint led to the discovery of a small, dismantled methamphetamine lab inside a commercial truck," Oregon State Police reported Sunday.
"At both agencies' request, the Oregon State Police (OSP) Drug Enforcement Section sent members from the statewide Clandestine Lab Response Team to assist with the investigation and coordinate removal of lab items."

TWO DIE IN HINDUSTAN ZINC PLANT GAS LEAK

Two workers died and nine others fainted on Saturday after they inhaled poisonous gas at a lead plant owned by Hindustan Zinc in Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, police said.
Enraged over the incident, workers protested outside the plant and burnt three vehicles including a police van and vandalised property, SP Rajsamand Rahul Katkey said. They also pelted stones at police leaving two policemen injured.
Katkey said some poisonous gas leaked out leaving Devi Lal and Madhav, both aged around 35 years, dead. The cause of the leakage was not known, he said.
Nine others fainted and were hospitalised in Udaipur where their condition is stated to be stable.
"The incident happened at a furnace at Dariba Lead plant of Hindustan Zinc which was under maintenance shut-down and there was a suspected gas leakage at about 1 PM from the system," Hindustan Zinc said in a statement.
"This unfortunate incident also led to two fatalities," it said, adding six workers had fainted but later all of them were declared out of danger.
The company has instituted an internal inquiry into the incident and said it would ensure that such incidents do not recur. It also said families of the deceased would be suitably compensated.
"Additional force was rushed to the spot to control the situation. The agitating mob was dispersed and the law and order is now under control," the SP said, adding, cases would be lodged against the agitating employees.

CHICAGO Ñ By the time Carlos Centeno arrived at the Loyola University Hospital Burn Center, more than 98 minutes had elapsed since his head, torso, arms and legs had been scalded by a 185-degree solution of water and citric acid inside a factory on this city's southwestern edge.
The laborer, assigned to the plant that afternoon in November 2011 by a temporary staffing agency, was showered with the solution after it erupted from the open hatch of a 500-gallon chemical tank he was cleaning. Factory bosses, federal investigators would later contend, refused to call an ambulance as he awaited help, shirtless and screaming. He arrived at Loyola only after first being driven to a clinic by a co-worker.
At admission Centeno had burns over 80 percent of his body and suffered a pain level of 10 on a scale of 10, medical records show. Clad in a T-shirt, he wore no protective gear other than rubber boots and latex gloves in the factory, which makes household and personal-care products.
