An incident almost every day: Louisiana Bucket Brigade reports on 2011 refinery accidents
Posted by The Pump Handle on December 6, 2012
The good news is that in 2011 there were 53 fewer reported refinery accidents in Louisiana than there were in 2010. The bad news is that the 301 refinery accidents reported to the state in 2011 released nearly 50,000 pounds more air pollutants and nearly 1 million gallons more contaminants to soil and water than did the 354 accidents reported in 2010 - this according to a new report released Monday by the Louisiana Bucket Brigade and United Steelworkers. "Our aim is to collaborate with the refineries to solve the problem. Unfortunately that day hasn't come yet," said Louisiana Bucket Brigade founding director Anne Rolfes on a call with reporters. "Refinery managers continue to act as if they don't have an accident problem. Until they face the facts, the oil industry, our economy, our environment and our health will suffer," said Ms Rolfes.

Three men dumping about 20 barrels of an unknown substance from a large pick up truck in Elysian Valley last night fled after being confronted by residents. However, the mess they left behind at an empty lot at the corner of Blake and Knox avenues is now being investigated and cleaned up, reports resident and neighborhood council member Allen W. Anderson. Said Anderson in an email:
Eyewitnesses said that they heard the boom of the drums being pushed out of the truck and that when confronted the three men doing the dumping closed the van up and sped awayÉ leaving a trail of liquid up Knox then turning right onto Ripple. The empty lot is fenced normally, so the men dumping the material had to open the gate and back the truck onto the property. The truck sideswiped the gate as it sped away, tearing the gate off its hinges.
....
* Update: The fire department said a hazardous material squad and one fire engine was on the scene last night as part of a "chemical investigation." No word yet on what the substance was in those drums. Meanwhile, in Burbank, more drums containing "various substances consistent with roofing materials similar to tar and white paint" were dumped on a street near a storm drain, reports L.A. Now.

FRENCH TEENS ARRESTED OVER CHEMICAL EXPLOSION NEAR TEACHER WHO REPORTED ANTI-SEMITISM

Two French teenagers were arrested on suspicion of setting off an explosion near a teacher after she reported receiving anti-Semitic threats at school.
The teenagers, 16 and 19 years old, were arrested on Dec. 13 in Aix-en-Provence near Marseille in southern France for allegedly setting off a chemical explosion in the classroom of their plastic arts teacher, according to France Info, a public radio station. No one was hurt in the explosion.
....
An unnamed police source told Ouest France, a local daily, that Viroulou is not Jewish and that "the anti-Semitic connotation" is not being investigated. The source added that the explosion -- which the two suspects allegedly caused by mixing hydrochloric acid with aluminium -- "had nothing to do" with the threat.
