Chemical Hygiene Officer
Conservation Center, Los Angeles County Museum of Art
The Conservation Center at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is seeking a Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO). LACMA operates four conservation laboratories and one research laboratory. The staff, of more than twenty five, includes conservators, scientists, technicians, fellows and interns who routinely use small quantities of hazardous chemicals, and a variety of tools and equipment.
Reporting to the Senior Conservation Scientist, the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) works with all five laboratories to integrate safety into their operations and promote a culture of safety. The CHO serves on the LACMA Safety Committee and interacts with staff museum-wide regarding safety activities related to the Conservation Center.
Some duties include: implements and updates the LACMA Safety Plans (Hazard Communication, Chemical Hygiene and Respiratory Protection) in the Conservation Center; conducts review sessions on safe laboratory practices; conducts introductory safety sessions for new staff; oversees respirator fit testing and hazardous waste removal services; monitors for radiation exposure; maintains chemical inventory records, MSDS files and training records; informs staff of current government safety regulations and trends in laboratory safety; places orders for laboratory chemicals and safety supplies; prepares annual chemical hygiene budget; maintains and improves chemical storage.
The qualified candidate will have a master's degree in chemistry or a related science field and at least five years of practical experience in a chemical laboratory. Certification by the National Registry of Certified Chemists (NRCC) or Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM) is preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to interpret scientific/technical terminology are essential.
