ELKHART - Hazmat crews were called to a north side Elkhart business Tuesday afternoon.
Shortly before 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, a fire was reported in the mixing room of Superior Oil. The business is on All Pro Drive near the Elkhart Municipal Airport, north of County Road 6.

The building was evacuated and other fire departments in the area were called to provide mutual aid.

WSBT spoke with Superior Vice President of Operations Steve Wakefield, who said an employee was filling a portable tank with flammable solvent, causing a flash fire.

A suppression foam firefighting system kicked in and blanketed the blaze with foam, extinguishing it.

One employee suffered burns to his hands and was taken to a hospital in Fort Wayne. The worker was wearing a fire protective suit at the time.

An Arlington High School science teacher was trying to neutralize sodium nitroferricyanide with 50 percent sodium hydroxide when the bad reaction occurred that sent her and five students to hospitals last week, Fire Department officials wrote in their incident report.

The mishap happened at around noon Thursday as International Baccalaureate students worked on a lab experiment to identify proteins and amino acids, Arlington school district officials said.

The district declined to identify the teacher or the students, citing privacy rules. Other students indicated in Twitter posts that the teacher was Brandi Bastas.

Bastas and four students "were affected by fumes and transported to area hospitals as a precautionary measure," the school district said in a statement. The fifth student showed no signs or symptoms but was transported at the parents' request, the Fire Department report said.

When firefighters arrived, they found the teacher and one student in the school nurse's office with breathing difficulties and a rash on their arms. Three more students later reported to the nurse's office with breathing difficulties.

Safety systems worked as designed, officials said, and the incident was contained to the lab area of the classroom. A complete evacuation of the school wasn't necessary.

MISHAWAKA -- The Environmental Protection Agency said Monday its own mistake caused Friday's chemical fire and leak at an abandoned Mishawaka factory.

According to the EPA's incident report, contractors working to clean up the old Baycote building left two different chemicals -- cyanide and sodium hydrosulfite -- too close together, causing them to spontaneously combust.

Sodium hydrosulfite is a highly reactive chemical, the report said, and the combination is probably what caused the fire to ignite, although the official cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. An explosion and a fire at a factory have rocked the city of Sumgait, the "chemical capital" of Azerbaijan.

Last night a fire at a plant of "Household Goods" OJSC led to the explosion of the fuel tanks. Helicopters were used for fire fighting.

If the Ministry of Health stated yesterday about one dead and seven wounded, now it reports of two dead, one missing person and two wounded.

The fire cause is still considered violations of occupational safety during welding operations, and Sumgait City Prosecutor's Office initiated a criminal case on Articles 162.2 (violation of safety rules) and 225.2 (violation of fire safety).

Earlier welding caused a massive fire in the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku.

Three 20 litre drums of unknown chemicals have been dumped at a North Shore cemetery and polilce are warning people to stay away.

Fire service spokesman Colin Underdown said they were called by police about 9.40am after a council staff member noticed the drums dumped down a bank at the Birkenhead-Glenfield Cemetery.

Underwood said they were unsure what chemical was inside the drums, two of which were full and sealed.

The third was empty and had been tipped out.

"We don't know what quantity of the chemical was tipped out, but they're 20 litre containers so that would be the maximum."

Underdown said the fire service had cordoned off the area and the council would arrange for the drums to be removed and the spill cleaned up.
