At Stanford's Medical School, faculty are split into four groups (or lines:  I suppose they use that term because faculty are always waiting in line for something):
  • University Tenure Line
  • Non-Tenure Line
  • Med-Center Line
  • Clinical Educators Line

In addition, we have PhDs who are Senior Scientists (staff, not faculty) who, if they can get funding, can also be PIs.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Academic title wording

For those of you in academic settings, particularly in major research institutions -

Are there documented cases of a person being a =E2=80=9CPI" and NOT being a faculty member.  That is, a "research professor" is still a faculty member.  Asked another way, is the wording

"faculty and Principal Investigators=E2=80=9D redundant?
