The Edmont
on Public School Board is prompting custodians to examine their boiler room p
rocedures after a poisonous carbon monoxide scare led to the evacuation of m
ore than 1,800 students Monday.
School staff evacuated Ross Sheppard High School located
at 13546 111 Ave., around 8 am Monday. Fire Department Hazmat cre
ws responding to what they initially thought was a gas leak discovered high l
evels of carbon monoxide and immediately began fumigating the school of the d
eadly gas.
"We checked the building for carbon monoxide levels and found le
vels up to 1,000 parts per million which is quite hazardous to human life,=E2
=80=9D said Hazmat Captain Eric Takacs.
Together with Atco Gas and Ross Sheppard Hi
gh School Maintenance, fire officials were able to determine the leak was th
e result of an open vent in the north wing boiler room, creating negative pr
essure in the ventilation system. The negative pressure pulled carbon monoxi
de fumes into school halls instead of venting them outside.

Monson Companie
s' South Portland facility has been fined $151,900 for storing hazardous che
micals in a way that could have led to the creation of toxic gases, a fire o
r an explosion, EPA officials say.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has fin
ed a South Portland company that manufactures and distributes chemicals $151
,900 for improper storage of hazardous materials.
Monson Companies Inc., of Leomi
nster, Mass., operates a warehouse, distribution, repackaging and custom ble
nding chemical manufacturing facility in South Portland, according to the EP
A.
Officials say Monson stored numerous chemicals "inappropriately." The ag
ency says incompatible chemicals were stored so close together that a spill o
r release of one could have set off a chemical reaction that might have crea
ted toxic gases, a fire or explosion.
The company also failed to identify hazardou
s wastes, maintain a proper emergency plan and submit a hazardous materials i
nventory to emergency responders, the EPA says in a press release.
