Two sisters cleaning out their elderly father's house about noon
Saturday could have used a hand from Superman when they came across a
box of apparently radioactive rocks.

However, the Indianapolis Fire Department's hazardous materials team
saved the day, and no one was injured.

The sisters, Anita Cohee, 56, and Diane Serban, 58, were going through
some of their father's things in the attic of his home in the 5500 block
of Skyridge Drive when they found a small box labeled "radioactive ore,"
according to a news release from IFD spokeswoman Rita Burris.

The box also included the notation "Uranium Thorium/Detection
Corporation North Hollywood California." Inside the box, the sisters
found nine plastic-wrapped rocks in layers of cotton.

They closed the box, got everyone out of the house and called 911.

Firefighters and HazMat Team 13 arrived and got a positive reading for
radiation. A second reading with a different kind of meter gave them a
reading of 13 microrems. The HazMat team said that was a small amount of
radioactive material -- about 1/100,000th of one rem, Burris said.

Still, they packed the rocks into an official yellow drum and removed
them from the Northeastside house. The drum will be turned over to the
Marion County Health Department for proper disposal.

AMMONIA LEAKS ONTO ROOF OF NORTH SIDE FOODS IN ARNOLD

Hazardous materials crews descended on Arnold on Saturday afternoon when
ammonia began leaking onto the roof of North Side Foods along Rivers
Edge Drive.

John Tedorski, Arnold's director of emergency management, said two
cooling towers used to maintain the pressure inside an ammonia storage
tank lost power.

The rising temperature caused the pressure to climb from a stable 85
pounds per square inch to nearly 125 ppi.

The excessive pressure caused a valve to blow about 1:30 p.m. and a
small amount of ammonia leaked outside onto the sausage packing
company's roof, Tedorski said.

The building was evacuated but no one was injured, Tedorski said.

GREENPORT - Columbia and Greene County HazMat team members were called
to the scene of a noxious gas leak at Yonder Farms' cold storage
facility on Route 66 in Greenport on Saturday.

Some 20 pounds of ammonia had leaked from a valve there in an incident
Greenport Fire Chief Gary Mazzacano later said was caused by the extreme
heat. Temperatures in the region had hit the mid to upper 90s.

FRANKLINVILLE, N.C. (WGHP)=97 Hazmat crews spent Saturday afternoon
cleaning up an oil spill in the Deep River in Randolph County.

A salvage company was reportedly cleaning out an abandoned building that
once housed Franklinville Manufacturing when a tank containing about 50
gallons of oil and sludge spilled into the Deep River, which feeds into
the Cape Fear River.

Clean-up crews floated two barriers to keep the spill from spreading.
Officials said the barriers are expected to collect all the spilled oil
and sludge.

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers, with assistance of Multnomah County
Sheriff's Office deputies, are continuing the investigation into a
commercial tanker truck and semi-trailer tanker rollover crash that
closed the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 about two miles east of
Multnomah Falls. ODOT, fire and a hazardous materials response team are
on scene assessing the damage, coordinating clean up efforts and working
to re-open the eastbound lanes.

Updated information indicates on July 24, 2011 at approximately 5:00
p.m. a tanker truck pulling a semi-tanker containing an estimated total
of 3,000 gallons of unleaded gasonline was traveling eastbound on
Interstate 84 near milepost 34. The truck traveled off the right
shoulder and collided into a guardrail, damaging about 500 feet of
railing as the truck and trailer rolled onto their right side. The truck
came to rest blocking the eastbound lanes and the trailer came to rest
overturned on the other side of the railing.

Swimming was briefly banned Friday afternoon at Warren Dunes State Park
after a semi carrying hazardous materials exploded at a truck stop in
Sawyer, Michigan on Thursday night.

Crews are on scene cleaning up the aftermath. Some of the materials
leaked into a drainage ditch that empties about one mile south of Warren
Dunes State Park, and water had tested positive for those chemicals.
That's according to the Berrien County drain commissioner, who is there
with conservation officers and the health department.

Based on hourly testing, the DNR has banned swimming at the dunes . They
have since lifted the swimming restriction.

When we asked what kind of chemical was being carried by the semi, we
were told it was some kind of corrosive.

Crews are still trying to clean up the chemical waste that spilled after
a tanker exploded in Sawyer, Mich. Thursday night.

A truck driver stopped at a TA Restaurant just off of I-94 and Sawyer
Road, and when he came back out he noticed a leak.

Authorities say the leak continued, and when the truck stopped venting,
it built up gas and exploded.

Everyone was evacuated and no injuries were reported.

There was no damage to the building, but power lines were knocked out.

Authorities at the scene said they are not yet sure what type of waste
was in the truck.

Chikaming police said the road and business remain closed.

A large propane tank outside Kansas University=92s Robinson Gymnasium
vented gas into the air Friday morning, leading to a Hazmat call.

KU Public Safety Office Assistant Chief Chris Keary said a building
security officer noticed a strange smell outside the building, 1301
Sunnyside Ave., shortly after 7 a.m. and called authorities.

The tank was believed to belong to a contractor who was working on the
building=92s roof.

Keary said the smell was particularly noticeable in a courtyard
southeast of the building. Keary said there was no immediate danger
inside the building, but the building was evacuated as a precaution.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical searched the building and did not
find dangerous levels of gas, said Jill Jess, a KU spokeswoman.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fire crews in Downtown Fresno have capped a
leak from a train that was letting out hazardous chemicals.

Fire crews recieved the call Friday morning when a train worker noticed
a strong odor coming from one of the cars. Fire crews immediately
recognized the chemical as hydrochloric acid and knew then they had to
act quickly.

Hazardous materials crews used a garbage bag and duct tape to cap the
leak until the valve causing the leak can be replaced.

Firefighters say the leak is no longer a threat.

NEW BEDFORD =97 A faculty member and two lab technicians were taken to
the hospital Friday afternoon following an apparent chemical reaction at
UMass Dartmouth's School for Marine Sciences and Technology, university
and fire officials said.

All three were treated and released. The incident happened at about 3
p.m. in a laboratory at the South End campus, and the building was
evacuated, UMD spokesman John Hoey said.

A glass container shattered, apparently due to a chemical reaction,
cutting one of the technicians on her arm. The faculty member may have
inhaled some of the fumes. All three were taken to the hospital by their
colleagues, Hoey said.

State hazardous materials personnel, police, and firefighters responded
to the scene. The chemicals believed to be involved in the incident are
vanadium penpoxide, sodium azide and acetic acid, according to the Fire
Department.

The incident remains under investigation, Hoey said.
