One of my oil company labs had a airline style chair in the area. Designated people were TRAINED AND ANNUAL PRACTICE with the disabled person in carrying them down the stairs. Another person brought their regular chair down the stairs.
Bouncing down the stairs is higher risk than carrying. Training and adequate persons is essential

Subject: [DCHAS-L] evacuation chair
Please forgive me if you see this on more than one list.
We need to accommodate a wheelchair-bound student in a 3rd-floor lab this Fall, so we’re looking at the purchase of an evacuation chair. From what I’ve seen so far, the idea is to transfer the mobility-restricted worker/student to the evacuation chair; another worker/student/staff member then ‘walks’ the chair down the stairs. Features & prices vary.
Does anyone have experience to share about these devices?
