As the science supervisor of a k-12 public school district, I have learned
not to rely on common sense regarding science safety. We have worked hard
to develop a deliberate policy-driven culture of science safety that drives
safety of students and all school staff. This culture includes regular
training, evaluation, and documentation of the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Dr. Stuart's updates remind us of safety incidents. We have learned that
every safety incident is preceded by several "close calls." We have learned
that by studying the close calls, we are able to stay out of the headlines.
Our slogan is "science safety is never an accident.". Trainings and
inspections are a pain, and require resources. However, compared to the
pain associated with a safety incident, nobody in the district, from the
superintendent to the students, consider this program inconvenient.

Good grief or for heaven's sake. I referred to COMMON SENSE. Really I don't
care whether it is taught by mom's, dad's, or by hard knocks on the street.
My intent was to point out that, whatever the reason, the current generation
seems to have grown up without sufficient COMMON SENSE. Apparently, I did a
poor job of communication. However, I am overjoyed that some of you are
incensed at my remarks. Perhaps this little bit of irritation will help some
of you to see the larger picture of safety. Also, I did not imply that
institutions are immune from establishing safe working conditions. COMMON
SENSE must be pervasive.

Ernie Lippert
