Slidell Police believe the man who allegedly blew up a
room at the La Quinta Inn with a make-shift meth lab Thursday night is
on the run in Alabama.
Scott Threlkeld, The Times-Picayune
Police and fire department officials respond to the
discovery of a methamphetamine lab Thursday at the La Quinta inn in
Slidell.
Brandon Bell, 28, was
allegedly trying to make meth in his second-floor room in the hotel at
794 East Interstate 10 Service Road when the ingredients exploded about
6:20 p.m., Assistant Slidell Police Chief Kevin Foltz
said.

Investigators said a chemical reaction caused the blast,
which occurred in a bin filled with construction debris. The bin was
between the Chabad House and a guest house near the
synagogue.
The blast sent a pipe from the bin onto the roof of
the guest house. The pipe left a hole in the roof of the building in the
1400 block of 18th Street.
Someone was trying to remove a large pipe that was
stuck in concrete near an alley but the chemical mixture they used
created pressure and launched the 4-foot-long pipe and plug of concrete
into the air, fire Capt. Mark Bridges said.
"The
device lifted up off the ground approximately 25 feet, punched a hole in
the (Chabad House) and then ricocheted,'' Bridges said.

A worker
at a Southwest Side trucking yard was taken to the hospital in
serious-to-critical condition this morning after an accident that
released chemical fumes, fire officials said.
A
container of the chemical--whose nature was not available--was knocked
over by a fork lift at R&L Carriers, 4359 W. 36th
St.
A Level 1 hazardous materials response was called at
4:39 a.m., and a worker who inhaled fumes was taken by paramedics to
Mount Sinai Hospital, said fire department spokesman Richard
Rosado.

WOODBRIDGE -- Route 440 is shut down in both

spilled 8,500 gallons of fuel on the roadway in an accident that left
the vehicle's driver in critical condition, according to the New Jersey
State Police Twitter feed.
The state police hazmat team responded to the accident
and contained the fuel spill with help from the New Brunswick Fire

GRAFTON =97 A worker at a trucking company
who accidentally emptied nitric acid into a drum containing water caused
a vapor cloud to erupt, which led to the evacuation of nearby homes and
businesses and North Grafton Elementary School yesterday.
Fire
Chief Michael Gauthier said when authorities received a call from Dana
Transport at 88 Westboro Road at 11:06 a.m., they thought there had been
a spill of the hazardous chemical. But it was later determined that a
worker had accidentally emptied nitric acid into a wastewater drum that
was sitting beside the one he should have used.

SAVANNAH,
Ga. --
A tanker truck caught fire
at the Colonial Oil Company on North Lathrop Avenue Friday
afternoon.

being unloaded when a spark ignited it.
Authorities say that one person has been killed and two
others were injured.
Fire crews have since put out the fire and applied
foam to the truck and a nearby filling platform.
No
evacuations of the business or nearby residential neighborhoods were
necessary. Authorities day there is no environmental danger from
the Toluene.

A chemical spill that
created noxious fumes sent two people to the hospital and closed two
business warehouses in Nesquehoning on Friday morning.
Nesquehoning Police Officer Timothy Wuttke said an emergency
response call for a sick male came in at 9:40 a.m. from Ametek
Winchester Plastics on Mountain Avenue in the borough.
At the
scene, Wuttke said emergency responders found two sick men, both of whom
had accidentally inhaled fumes from a chemical that spilled during a
delivery of supplies at the plastics manufacturing
facility.
Wuttke said Ametek's delivery area was wet with rain
Friday when the chemical - maleic anhydrid - spilled. Mixed with water,
maleic anhydrid becomes maleic acid.
"Apparently when they were
unloading the shipping container, the package opened and the substance
spilled out. When it comes in contact with water, which it did, it
releases fumes that are hazardous when inhaled," Wuttke
said.

in a Port Charlotte restaurant parking lot Friday evening; one person
was injured by chemical fumes.

1020 Tamiami Trail. Witnesses told deputies they heard a loud bang and
observed smoke coming from a plastic soda bottle they found in the
parking lot. A 27 year old North Port woman said she saw the explosion
and inhaled some of the smoke; she said it tasted like chemicals. EMS
was called and deputies said she was treated and released at the
scene.

bottle that exploded, they located an unexploded one in the bushes
nearby. Charlotte County Fire cleared both containers and turned them

FAIRBANKS =97 The transfer station on Old Steese
and Farmers Loop was shut down Friday evening while a hazardous
materials team cleaned up photo processing chemicals that were left
there.
The chemicals were reported lying in the reuse area of
