Position Description:

The Scripps Research Institute is seeking an Environmental
Health and Safety (EH&S) Director for its Florida facility. This Flori
da based position regularly
interfaces with senior management to establish EH&S strategic plans an
d objectives; establishes and implements policies and procedures for a safe
, and healthful work environment through management of EH&S employees a
nd department programs for the Florida location;
directs a staff that includes a Radiation Safety Officer and a Biosafety O
fficer; interfaces with EH&S counterparts in California; ensures that t
he Florida location complies with federal, state, and local regulations per
taining to environmental safety and
oversees all contact with appropriate agencies; interfaces with regulatory
agencies, legislative bodies, and industrial organizations in the developm
ent and modification of laws and regulations that impact biomedical researc
h; develops and oversees training
programs for employees in areas such as material handling, emergency respo
nse, industrial hygiene, and life safety; ensures that timely and appropria
te corrective actions are taken to eliminate or mitigate hazards; in conjun
ction with the Vice President of
Scientific Operations in Florida, implements the Emergency Response Plan a
nd is the Institution's Chemical Hygiene Officer. As necessary will perform
other related duties, tasks and responsibilities in order to ensure a safe
and healthful work environment
is maintained.
Position Requirements/Basic Qualifications:
Requires a Master's degree in Biology, Industrial Hygiene, Health Physics,
Safety Engineering, Safety Management or environmental or safety related di
scipline or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experie
nce from which comparable knowledge,
skill and abilities have been attained. Requires a minimum of 10 years of
related experience, of which 3 years should have been served in a research
environment and 4 years in a management/supervisory capacity. In addition,
strong analytical and effective
verbal and written communications skills are required, as is a demonstrate
d ability to effectively interact with and manage varied technical personal
ities.
Preferred Qualifications:
Background/experience in chemical safety and/or industrial hygiene strongly
preferred. Ph.D in Biology, Industrial Hygiene, Health Physics, Safety Eng
ineering, Safety Management or environmental or safety related discipline i
s preferred. Certification by a
national professional review board such as the American Board of Industria
l Hygiene, the American Board of Health Physics, or the National Registry o
f Microbiologists is preferred.
