Don et
al,
While I
think the decision not to hold a student responsible unless there were
some incredibly culpable and deliberate actions is correct, we cannot
and should not accept that "stuff happens" and therefore no additional
safety measures need be taken.
A true focus on a campus safety culture can prevent the majority
of them. Valves fail,
piping fails, containers leak, power is lost to exhaust hoods, etc. and
on ad infinitum, but the great majority of these incidents can be
prevented or mitigated, and preventive actions can preclude most of
them.
You are
correct. We must
strive to foster a true campus (and in all other settings) safety
culture.
