CHAS members may be aware that members of the Division, with the help of the ACS Committee on Chemical Safety and Committee on Professional Training, conducted a survey of chemistry departments nationwide in April. The purpose of the survey was to generate a picture of current chemical safety management practices in higher education in the United States. The response rate from approximately 900 chemistry departments contacted was about 44%. The survey was designed by ACS members based on their professional judgement of the key factors that impact safety cultures in academic departments. We did not include a survey professional in this initial effort. While this means that the survey may not be strictly scientific, we believe that the results are quite interesting, both for what the responses were, but also for questions that are left unanswered. We are beginning the process of analyzing the results, which are available at http://www.dchas.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid= 69 We are also considering follow up steps to the survey, including possibilities such as surveying other stakeholders in academic safety culture (e.g. students, or EHS professionals who serve these departments) to see how their responses compare to those we've already received. We are very interested in feedback from CHAS members about patterns they see in the results. We'd appreciate it if you could take the time to review the information at the site above and provide your thoughts on what they mean. There's a short survey available at http://www.dchas.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid= 74 where you can share your thoughts on this with us. Let me know if you have any questions about this. - Ralph Ralph Stuart secretary**At_Symbol_Here**dchas.org Secretary Division of Chemical Health and Safety American Chemical Society
