Back when I was a pharma safety person, we had dry chem.. extinguishing sys
tems in our scale-up lab fume hoods. I know the company's new research labs
in England had water suppression systems in all research lab fume hoods- b
ut don't recall the rationale(it may be a requirement there).
With our drychem systems I can recall two system activations - one a real f
ire that tripped the system, and one a situation where high temperatures me
lted the fusible link.
In both cases the system appears to have operated as designed. The real fir
e situation happened during a large scale chromatographic isolation where l
arge volumes of solvent were in use. The drychem put the fire out immediate
ly, got everyone's attention, and was a real bear to clean up. It did take
a few days to recharge the system.
I'm sure there are some downsides to dry chem, especially if you have hot e
quipment and the possibility for re-ignition exists.

While on the topic of sprinkler systems, what is everyone's view on
sprinkler systems installed inside a fume hood? This has been a topic that
our insurer has batted around with us for years. They would like to
recommend sprinklers be installed inside fume hoods where larger volumes of
flammable solvents are used (such as floor-to-ceiling fume hoods in our
scale-up labs and waste accumulation rooms).
Any comments would be appreciated.

Either way, I'd check with your facilities folks to see which vendors are
used in other parts of the university. You might get better service this
way and it's definitely easier to work with only one vendor. If they don't
have someone they recommend, you want to make sure you find a vendor that
understand the safety needs of a laboratory.
