us_tn: HAZMAT scare evacuates Roane County community
ROANE COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) - A Roane County community was evacuated Thursday evening due to a hazardous materials scare.

Roane County authorities confirmed the incident started around 6:00 p.m. when a man called 911 about some suspicious canisters he had found in the 400 block of Poland Hollow Road in Harriman.


Few other details were released about the incident, though neighbors told Volunteer TV News that the man punctured one of the tanks to drain it, and was apparently overcome by chlorine fumes escaping from the canister.

He was transported to the hospital for a checkup.

Crews from the Roane County Sheriff=92s Department, Harriman Police Department and Roane County Emergency Management Agency were called to the scene, set up roadblocks along Poland Hollow Road and evacuated a half-mile area around the canisters.

EMA officials lifted part of the evacuation order around early Thursday night and expected to be finished at the scene by 12:00 a.m. Friday.

india: Fire damages Wockhardt's unit at Ankleshwar
MUMBAI: A fire at pharmaceutical major Wockhardt=92s Rs 300-crore Ankleshwar facility damaged one of its six manufacturing plants. It will take six months to recommission the unit, a company spokesman said.

A person familiar with the development said the fire was caused by hazardous chemical leakage. Wockhardt manufactures pharmaceutical ingredients to make its own drug formulations, which it sells in the US, India and other markets. This integrated manufacturing process helps the company increase its margins compared with peers, who buy active pharmaceutical ingredients and then make formulations.

us_mi: Man, 21, seriously injured in Taylor garage blast
Taylor -- A 21-year-old resident is hospitalized today with serious injuries to his face following an explosion in a garage Tuesday night, according to the Taylor Police Department.
A preliminary investigation points to chemical materials used to make homemade fireworks as the possible cause of the explosion, police said.
Taylor Police and firefighters were called to the explosion on the 25000 block of Greenlawn Street about 8 p.m. Tuesday. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) were called in to assist.

ATF agents seized materials to be analyzed.
Two 14-year-old neighbors who were visiting the home at the time of the explosion were treated at area hospitals for injuries to their eyes and ears. Both teens are expected to be fine.

australia: Fiery explosion of gas, chemical van causes chaos on Kwinana Freeway
FIREFIGHTERS have rushed to the Kwinana Freeway after a vehicle with gas bottles and chemicals on board burst into flames just before midday.

Fire crews were called to the southbound lanes of the freeway near the Manning Road off-ramp at 11.40am after the driver called 000 for help.

It is understood that there are heightened safety concerns, with reports that the vehicle was carrying hydrochloric acid and other chemicals.

It is understood the driver was able to pull his vehicle over to the emergency stopping lane and scramble to safety before it was engulfed in flame.

canada: Hazmat on Broadway
Vancouver Police closed down streets for a time Wednesday evening so they could dispose of a potentially explosive chemical.

Police were notified by staff from a medical building at Broadway and Fir that they had a small amount of picric acid that may have aged to the point where it had become unstable. The Bomb Squad removed the acid from the building and safely disposed of it.

Like TNT, picric acid is explosive but can also be used in a variety of medical tests.

There were no injuries.

us_mi: Goodwill Store Still Closed After Hazmat Incident
BANGOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Emergency crews were called to the Goodwill in Bay County=92s Bangor Township around noon Wednesday.
Responding authorities said two women inhaled some type of powder from a canister.
A Bay City Fire Department hazardous materials team was at the scene for a short time.
TV5 has learned numerous red =93hazardous materials=94 bags were stacked near the store.
Authorities said the women, both employees at Goodwill, opened a container and an unknown white substance blew into the air.
The store, located at K-Mart Plaza at the corner of Wilder and Euclid, was shut down and investigators are still working to pinpoint what the substance was.
It=92s not clear how badly injured the women were or when the store is scheduled to reopen.

us_il: Fumes sicken 8 at Franklin Park packaging plant
Eight workers at a Franklin Park salad-packaging plant were sickened from by fumes from a bad mixture of cleaning solution Wednesday night.

Firefighters responded to the incident at the Midwest Fresh Farms Express Company at 11010 Addison Street around 11 p.m., according to Franklin Park fire chief David Traiforos.

"We evacuated the building because we believed initially there was a chlorine leak," he said. "What we found was a drum with a bad mixture just outside a work area that was close enough to workers to cause the injuries," he said.

Eight workers who complained of respiratory problems and eye irritation were transported to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood and Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, all apparently in good condition.

"Our paramedics were overwhelmed by a number of workers complaining, but no one was in serious condition," Traiforos said.

He said crews checked the building and determined there was no residual chlorine, and allowed the workers to return.

us_co: Ethanol tanker spills load on I-76
BRUSH - A tanker truck carrying ethanol spilled part of its load Tuesday evening, causing Interstate 76 to be shutdown for hours.

According to Colorado State Patrol the road re-opened early Wednesday morning.

State Patrol says the driver of the tanker was exiting the highway near milepost 90 and lost control of the tanker truck which ended up on its side.

Both directions of I-76 were closed from milepost 89 to 92 while HazMat teams worked on containing and clearing the spill.

The driver was transported to Colorado Plains Medical Center with minor injuries.

CSP is investigating the crash and charges are pending.

canada: U of T building reopened after hazardous chemical fears
A U of T building has reopened after it was evacuated Tuesday morning because of a potentially hazardous chemical inside one of the school=92s research labs.

Toronto Fire Capt. Mike Strapko said that just before 10 a.m., U of T staff found that a small quantity of an anhydrous acid, about 100 grams, had dried out in a lab at the Banting Institute, a medical research facility at 101 College St.

When dried out, Strapko said, the chemical has the potential to become unstable and is potentially hazardous. As a result, the building was evacuated.

TTC buses were parked nearby to provide shelter for staff and students.

The Toronto Fire hazardous materials technicians and Toronto Police Emergency Task Force bomb squad attended the scene to remove the chemical.

Strapko called the evacuation =93a precautionary measure,=94 saying that the chemical likely wouldn=92t have become unstable without an interfering measure, such as heat.

NORTH PLAINFIELD -- Eight students and teachers from East End Elementary School in North Plainfield were taken to the hospital today after chemical fumes spread through the second floor of the Oneida Avenue school, officials said.
None was considered seriously ill, borough Fire Chief William Eaton said.
The fumes were attributed to a chemical being used to unclog a drain on the second floor. Shortly after a teacher fell ill, officials evacuated the 475-student school as a precautionary measure. Students and teachers were taken to Hydewood Park Baptist Church two blocks away.
Shortly after the evacuation, a few more students and teachers began to feel ill, and ambulances from the borough rescue squad and Somerset Medical Center took eight people to the medical center as a precaution, Eaton said.

us_il: Hazmat crew takes chemicals from Rockford garage
ROCKFORD =97 A Rockford Fire Department Hazardous Materials crew has removed a large amount of chemicals from the garage of a home in the 5000 block of Norwich Drive near Brookview Elementary School.

Police said they noticed a strong odor coming from the garage when they returned a man to the home shortly after 10 a.m. The man is in police custody while police determine what kind of chemicals were in the garage and why they were stored there.

Some of the chemicals removed from the garage were corrosive and many were in unmarked containers, said District Chief Chuck Martini.

Residents in four or five neighboring homes were told to stay inside, keep windows closed and keep pets inside, but no one was evacuated from the area.

MAMMOTH SPRING, AR (KAIT) --What could have been a huge, possibly fatal fire or an enormous bio-disaster was prevented this morning just outside Mammoth Spring.

A tanker truck carrying 75 hundred gallons of ethanol ran off Highway 63 South, rolled on its side and began leaking.

us_tx: Coach falls ill due to chlorine leak at Lamar High School pool
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A high school coach fell ill Monday afternoon due to a chlorine leak at the school's campus.

According to HISD spokesperson Sarah Osbourne, early in the afternoon, a coach at Lamar High School who helps maintain the pool was having difficulty breathing due to a chlorine leak. HFD's HazMat team was called to the school and capped the leak.
The coach was taken to Methodist Hospital to be checked out. No other students or staff was affected by the leak. The pool is housed separately from the rest of the campus.

us_tx: Fire Burns for Second Day
DALLAS - Hazmat crews are keeping an eye on a major fire in southeast Dallas fire that can be seen for miles.

Flames broke out atop the McCommas Bluff landfill in the 5100 block of Youngblood Road, near the interchange of I-20 and I-45, around 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Dallas Fire-Rescue says the fire is under control, but continue to keep an eye on it, because of the danger of methane gas, a natural byproduct of landfills.

It's not yet clear how the fire started.

us_mi: HAZMAT team sent to high school
UNION CITY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Emergency responders were sent to the Union City High School Tuesday.

Authorities say that they received a report that phosphorous was spilled at the school around 9:00 am.

Branch County dispatchers say that the spill was minor.

A HAZMAT team responded. Streets around the school were shut down so that crews could clean up the area. 

Students were sent home early because of the incident.

Authorities at the school say that a chemistry teacher dropped a jar of yellow phosphorous while preparing for a class experiment. Yellow phosphorous is flammable when it is exposed to air.

Several students were in the room when the accident happened. No one was injured. The teacher was taken to a hospital to be checked out
