How ol d is the lab? Real old labs might have some wood in construction - especial ly a problem with perchlorate. What about azides?  Was there any blood work done that would leave azide traces (Coulter Counter, etc.).

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Decommissio ning Fume Hoods/Traps

Good morning,

We're doing some laborato ry renovations and I am interested in hearing from others who have decommis sioned labs for your renovators...

If you were requested to "evaluat e laboratory fume hoods for the potential of hazardous materials through wi pe sampling", and you knew no perchlorates were ever used, did you test for anything else?  (What materials actually CAN be analyzed this way?  These are fume hoods that need a wipe-down, but aren't showing signs of significant contamination)

If you were requested to 'biologically a nd chemically decontaminate traps" for chemistry labs, what did you/your ou tside contractors do?

I want tomake sure these areas are safe for th e workers, and will contract out this work to a hazmat/hazwaste specialty v endor, but I want to know what is reasonable to do...I have a fair idea of the history of most of the labs so if there is a 'flow chart' approach that would be very helpful.

Many thanks!
Margaret
