The responsibility for flushing the eyewash fountains should belong to
the
users in research groups and the students in the lab courses.
In research groups: Let each member of the group be responsible fo
r
flushing the eyewash(es) for one month. The PI can have the first
month.
We say "Safety is everyone's responsibility." Here's a good way t
o
practice it.
In courses with labs: Post the names of the students in the course
next to the eyewash and have a different student flush and then sign and dat
e
the list. Make it part of the curriculum.
Stop being their parent. Spend your time and money on other
things.

frequency
As campus facilities resources tighten, we have been aske
d if
it is
really necessary to flush eyewashes and safety showers wee
kly.
To
respond intelligently, we are thinking of taking random sampl
es
of
eyewash and safety shower water and testing them for the pres
ence
of
Legionella and Acanthamoeba. We have a variety of these fixtu
res
on
campus that are known to have been flushed on different
schedules.
We're a little discouraged by the cost of the tests
($400/fixture) and
we're trying to gauge if other locations have
done similar sampling
and how useful the resulting information
is.
I appreciate any information people are willing to share.
