Thank you, Todd Job Description: Lead, Chemist Research Safety Program The Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR) is seeking a process chemist with scale up and chemical safety experience to initiate and drive continuous improvements in chemistry research safety (Chemical Hygiene Officer, safety committee representative, etc) and training initiatives, systems, and processes. This influential, visible role is new to and unique in NIBR, offering a motivated individual the opportunity to blend deep chemistry expertise with an interest in training In this distinctive role, the successful candidate will provide expertise and consultation for Global Discovery Chemistry (GDC) management to ensure health and safety programs and education/training initiatives are integrated into scientific processes. The goal of this HSE-Chemistry partnership is to develop and support a culture of health and safety excellence in chemistry research. Specific expectations of this role, in partnering with GDC management and HSE, are as follows: Develop efficient and effective chemical safety training programs that are targeted to GDC needs Develop and implement awareness programs and targeted training to meet the needs and interests of chemistry associates, support GDC's global commitment to chemical safety, and work with GDC and HSE colleagues to ensure mechanisms are in place to monitor effectiveness Develop and maintain the framework of guidelines and standards to ensure business-oriented, efficient, and effective integration of health and safety practices in Cambridge Lead a joint GDC/HSE Committee to define requirements and oversee performance, set corrective actions and improvement programs, and bring together common practices across NIBR chemistry, globally Ensure activities related to the use and scale up of hazardous chemicals in laboratories are conducted in a safe manner as well as in compliance with OSHA regulations assessing chemistry operations and processes conducting work place assessments participating in accident investigations Key Performance Indicators Regulations and guidelines are up to date and reflect the state of the art. Education and certification programs for associates on chemical health and safety topics are in place. Systems for sharing lessons learned and the transfer of know how and best practices are in place. Experience: Masters Degree in Organic Chemistry or related field, with PhD degree a plus. Laboratory experience in organic chemistry, process chemistry, or scale up processes. Direct experience in process chemistry, scale up, or chemical health and safety (e.g., Chemical Hygiene Officer, safety committee representative, etc). a plus.
