Description

Located in Ithaca, N.Y., Cornell University is a bold, innovative,

Under the general supervision of the Manager of the Hazardous Materials 
group, the Senior Chemical Waste Technician is responsible for managing the 
day to day activities of Cornell's program for the collection and disposal 
of hazardous chemical wastes as regulated under the Resource Conservation 
and Recovery Act (RCRA).  These duties include:  migrating the existing 
program to utilize electronic media, collecting and managing hazardous 
waste, and oversight of all RCRA 90 day accumulation areas.  This 
responsibility extends to all facilities except the Cornell Medical School. 
The individual also performs safety and compliance inspections, advises 
faculty, staff and students about safety and compliance, and completes 
special projects.


This person is a member of the emergency response team for hazardous 
materials emergencies.  The expectations include the following:  On an as 
needed basis, responds to incidents involving hazardous materials both 
during and after normal working hours. Participates in emergency 
drills.  Acts under the direction of appointed EH&S Incident command staff. 
The individual will also wear an emergency pager, both during and after 
normal working hours.

Qualifications

Required
    * Bachelor's degree or formal four-year training program in chemistry 
(or a closely related field), or equivalent work experience.
    * Three to five years of experience in hazardous waste management 
programs, including at least one years experience with laboratory related 
operations.
    * Understanding of the design and implementation of programs for 
storage and handling of hazardous waste, education of waste generators 
about appropriate management practices, and assessment of facilities for 
compliance with regulatory requirements.
    * Understanding of EPAs regulations and requirements for generators of 
hazardous and universal wastes.
    * Familiarity with business software applications.
    * Broad knowledge and understanding of the hazards that chemicals 
present.
    * Ability to obtain a valid Commercial Drivers license with Hazardous 
Materials Endorsement.
    * Documented experience in hazardous materials spill clean up 
procedures, and is required to meet the Universitys Haz-Mat Response 
criteria for training, medical monitoring, technical proficiency and 
on-call availability.
    * May be required to wear, and must be physically capable of wearing, 
respiratory protection equipment and other personal protective equipment.

Preferred
    * Training - Current certification in RCRA; DOT hazardous materials 
transportation; HAZWOPER operations, Incident Command System.  A nationally 
recognized certification (CHMM, CIH).
    * Work experience at a University.
    * Experience as the Incident Commander of hazardous materials responses.
