MAJOR DUTIES: The incumbent will serve as Radiation Safety Officer for both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation programs; develop the infrastructure to maintain regulatory compliance with both the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment regulations (CDPH&E) for sealed and unsealed radioactive materials and x-ray equipment; work with the NIST Institutional Radiation Safety Committee and researchers to provide a safe working environment related to work with radioactive materials; serve as liaison to the NRC and CDPH&E on ionizing radiation issues; maintain inventories, perform swipe tests and leak tests; develop emergency response plans for radioactive materials; maintain all monitoring equipment; and organize and maintain all license records. The incumbent will also serve as Laser Safety Officer and work with senior scientists to modify and implement the laser safety program for approximately 450 lasers, many of which are class 3 and 4. The incumbent will work with senior scientists to identify laboratory hazards and make recommendations for minimizing the hazards; coordinate OSHA compliance in laboratory settings related to lab operations; and participate with the NIST Safety Operational Committee to develop programs that are OSHA compliant.
