San Diego State University is one of 23 campuses of the California State
University system and is the oldest and largest higher education
institution in the San Diego region and the third largest in the state
of California. Founded in 1897, SDSU has grown to offer bachelor's
degrees in
81 areas, master's degrees in 72, and doctorates in 16. Designated a
"Doctoral/Research-Intensive University" by the Carnegie Foundation,
SDSU is among the top 6.7 percent of higher education institutions in
the United States.
The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) endeavors to
ensure the health and safety of the San Diego State University campus of
over 40,000 faculty, staff, students, and auxiliaries. The department is
composed of the Associate Vice President for Human Resources and Risk
Management, the Director of Environmental Health and Safety, six program
managers and assistants, an Administrative Analyst, and student
assistants/interns. The program areas of responsibility include:
Asbestos and Lead Management; Air Pollution Control; Biosafety; Fire and
Life Safety; Hazardous Materials Management; Hazardous Waste Management;
Industrial Hygiene; Occupational Safety; Radiation Safety; Sanitation;
Stormwater Management; and Universal Waste Management. The department
provides guidance to the campus to achieve and maintain compliance with
a multitude of local, state and federal regulations governing these
program areas.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Assistant Environmental Hygiene Officer/Assistant
Biosafety Officer (AEHO/ABO) will assist in all aspects of the
broad-based Environmental Hygiene and Biosafety programs at San Diego
State University including elements of biosafety, bloodborne pathogen
control, controlled substances, food service sanitation, indoor air
quality, industrial hygiene, laboratory animal facilities, medical
surveillance, noise, potable water quality, and swimming pool
sanitation. The incumbent will conduct inspections, audits and
investigations as required; will provide correspondence, reports and
other documents as needed; will develop and conduct training as needed;
will recruit, train and supervise technical assistants, interns and
student assistants in various program responsibilities; represent
department on various campus-wide committees and serve as a member of
the campus emergency response team.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Working knowledge of applicable federal
and state regulations and local ordinances. Knowledge of technical
requirements for environmental hygiene and biosafety programs. Strong
computer skills, particularly word processing and relational databases.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication
skills. Ability to present training programs effectively.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in environmental health,
public health, biology or related field and one year of directly related
experience with a combination of industrial hygiene, environmental
health or general health discipline. Registered Environmental Health
Specialist
(REHS) eligible preferred.
SPECIALIZED SKILLS REQUIRED: Proficient with Word, Excel, and Access.
Valid California driver's license and good driving record.
